Larsson only retired from playing in October last year! only some 7 months ago, and it was clear to see that having not set the World alight having left Celtic (just 14 goals in La Liga/Premiership), being marked by Ben Shepherd was more taxing than his goal laden career in the SPL!

Don't think you have much of a clue about Larsson Sandy.

Oh really? I know he plundered a huge amount of goals in sub-standard leagues (SPL, the Allsvenskan (thats the Swedish League for those who don't know) and the Eredivisie)...he was Golden Boot winner through a high total in the SPL. Much like Ally McCoist, who, as you know so much about football, failed on his attempts in England with Sunderland.

Unfortunately, I'm not one of those who's overly impressed by the plundering of huge totals in lesser leagues - for Larsson, read Mario Jardel.

His movement and energy has always been impressive, but at the TOP LEVEL he will remain effectively untested, unless you're calling Falkirk, Kilmarnock and St Mirren as such.

Coming on in the final of the champions league which arsenal were holding on and barca looked like they would lose to set up both goals and win them it?

He was basically the whole team against Porto in the eufa cup final for celtic (the same team who won the CL the next year under Jose.

The very fact you're comparing Larsson with Jesper Blomqvist and Djimi Traore shows that you're clutching at straws a little

Not at all, quite simply stating that winning the Champions League, maketh a top player not.

I'm sorry, but I don't subscribe to the opinion that Henrik Larsson was a top class striker, based on the fact he didn't perform domestically, at the top level. I'm afraid unlike some, I'm not blinkered by hundreds of goals against FC Sporran and Tam O'Shanter FC.

Your argument seems to be based on where he played rather than how he played.

Yes, it seems stat based rather than just watching him and appreciating he had something that most didn't.

I think a good player looks very good in the right circumstances - ie against lesser opposition!.

I'm pretty sure I could name 20 superior strikers over the past 10 years without much effort....

While I accept that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, some carry more weight than others:

"When he came to Barcelona, Henrik said nice things about me but by the time he left he was my idol," said Ronaldinho. "In fact, he was my idol even before that. I remember him playing for Sweden in the 1994 World Cup. Henrik taught me a lot about football and I learned even more from him as a person. I was disappointed that he left for Sweden because I would have loved to have played with him for longer. Now United will benefit from his experience and knowledge. They are incredibly lucky. He is still in incredibly good shape and could carry on playing at the highest level for a long time."
Ronaldinho (Brazil/Barcelona) on Henrik Larsson, Jan 2007

Larsson's talents have quickly come to the fore throughout his career. At Celtic, he scored 242 times in 315 appearances in all competitons; for Sweden, he has 36 goals in 93 games; at Barcelona, the club legend Julio Salinas, writing in El Mundo Deportivo, awarded him 10 out of 10 for his performances last season, higher than any other player, including Ronaldinho.
"He had an incredible season," Salinas said last night. "I had no option but to give him 10 out of 10. He always went about his job in the right way. He spent time on the bench but never once did he moan. His whole demeanour was admirable and when he was given his chance he took it. I can only be impressed by Larsson as a person and a player. He is 35 but he runs around like a 20-year-old. It was a shame he did not stay as he still has a lot to give at the highest level."

By the same token, I'm sure you will remember Bayern Munich's Bixente Lizarazu famously calling Larsson over-rated, inferior to Roy Mackaay, and not good enough to get in the Bayern Munich side, before they played in the Champions League in 2007.

That's Lizarazu, 5 time Bundesliga Champion, World Cup and European Championships winner.

You're telling me a player talked about a future opponent in derogatory terms directly before they met in an important fixture?! Such was my incredulity I had to look it up, and turns out he did.

I also found this

Larsson robbed the dozy Bixente Lizarazu and set up Agathe for a cross which was initially missed by Hartson but not by Thompson, who sent a firm header past Kahn.

Maybe Bixente should have kept schtum.

I think everyone needs to calm down just a little bit.

But i do have to agree with Sandy10 on this occassion, Henrik Larsson is far too over-rated.

Also, Psyco Sonny - how can Larsson be one of your all time two favourite players?! There are far better players than him!

Indeed he should, although I note Roy Makaay scored both Bayern's goals in the 2-1 win, justifying his comments somewhat!.....

Larsson was more than just a striker, just for your information since you seem to be stark on that.

I think it's generally accepted he was a striker, he did play in deep lying roles later in his career, but predominantly in a striking role.

No, he played up front, but his contribution to the team was far more than just as a 'striker'.

You seem to have a real problem with Larsson, strange one. Have you watched him play much? Attended many matches in which he's played? It's just that from what you've said your views seem to be based on WHERE he played rather than how he played.
