Two posts, from two different threads today.

I just simply don't care about retail workers. If they are too lazy or hopeless to ever have any dreams it isn't my problem.

So the lazy and/or stupid have been ripped off by less than £5 a month. Who gives a flying **** about this?

I have said similar things in the past and to be honest I am not proud of it. Thankfully I am a bit older, a bit wiser and when you actually see some of the struggles people face in society today I can't help but think we all have a social responsibility to help those who are less fortunate than us.

Has society lost is way?

It's a bit of a stretch to claim that society has lost its way based on stuff like this.

I thought the top comment was a bit brutal, but I can understand where he is coming from. I think it's sad to see people who are more than happy to stay in the low end jobs they're in with no aspirations to do better or move up the "chain", I've even experienced people in low end jobs who almost take offence to the notion of working your way up, and act like people should be grateful they have a job at all; as if wanting to do better for yourself means you're ungrateful about being in current employment.

same as its always been to be honest, some people who are doing better than others have always needed to shout about how everyone's lazy because they haven't managed the same.

problem is the reason for this sounding off could be a few things, first up they are just idiots who need to show off. or they feel a need to prove to themselves they are better than someone else for their own self worth.

some probably have had to fight to were they are and feel its their rite to shame people who are lazy because after all if they have managed it why cant anyone else.

Those that have berate those that don't have.

I believe in social responsibility to help those that genuinely need it and will do something with the help. I strongly don't believe we should help those who don't want the help or are willing to **** it all away.

For example I will give money to help support war veterans who are in hard times either through injury or age but i won't give money to a begger on the street to pay for booze or fags.

I once witnessed a homeless guy, who looked in need of a good meal, kick off at a genuine Samaritan who bought him a Pizza from the pizza shop a few doors up from where he was begging. The guy thought he was helping by giving him food but he went mental saying he wanted the money and threw the pizza back at the guy who gave it to him.

Typo aside, what exactly do this mean? It's bit of a weasel statement. In terms of people lacking empathy, it's nothing new!

Although the Internet is great for bringing like-minded people together, it also brings you into contact with people who you'd never associate with along with their charming views which they'd likely keep quiet in-person.

Have people been driven to the point where it is almost dog it eat, everyone for themselves I suppose.

Are people today more prepared to step on others to get on?

I see the above as two ends of the same problem.

Thing is it is this attitude that they must be lazy because they are in unskilled or low paid jobs, some people just don't need 'more' to be happy and the fact they are happy with what they have or are doing just does not register with some people.

It seems like people just don't have the ability to empathize these days.

To me that is a narrative that has been pushed.

same as it always has been, the rich flout their wealth and insult the poor for being so.

the poor have a feirce and stoic pride at the hard work they put in to feed their families and think the rich are ill-adjusted just because 'what do they know about a days hard graft?'

the difference is, and its a big step up for humanity is we no longer flog the poor for raising their voice.

i'm of the opinion is certain medical conditions notwithstanding, there is no such thing as being stupid except in the scenario of those who refuse to work and learn their way to their percieved acceptable level in life, this applies as much to the cast of towie as it does to the patrons of the jeremy kyle show.

My post did not demonstrate a lack of empathy for those on low wages, I just do not believe that anyone on wages high enough that energy bills are not already paid for in benefits are going to notice 16 pence a day.

I agree, but to me there is an ever increasing amount of hostility to certain sections of society.

From what I've read this is common during times of economic downturn. Also, there are a lot more ways to communicate tripe than ever before, so maybe it's just more visible now.

Take for instance when the media had an obsession with black teenage knife crime in London, it was all over the press for a few weeks/months, what's happened to it now? Has it suddenly stopped? Or is it just less visible in the main press?

I agree, I see on here hostility towards the poor, the wealthy, the elderly, the fat , cyclists etc, etc. for a forum of supposedly intelligent techie types, it's quite pitiful.

There are lazy people though who just don't care about working. I can't blame them, i hate working myself. Even though i do something i like and i don't mind my job. I still hate it to some extent.

Most of these so called rich or well off people are not doing so well. A lot of them are in debt and living month by month. Working hard to sustain their life style for themselves and their families. Then we hear stories about a guy that is on £50k a year on benefits living in a £1million council house.

Then some guy in retail is moaning about life. Yea well so is everyone else, i think is the attitude that people have. Plus these days the governments takes all the extra money and is meant to be providing the welfare with it. So makes people even less likely to want to help people when they think they already paid for that. There is also so much pressure on people to succeed and they want a better life so they always thinking about themselves because that is the only way they think they can get a head.
