Social Media getting a bit...overbearing.

Why is a bot policing his private posts and profile? That's the issue, heavy handed censorship like this is ridiculous.

Well private would be in messenger, and I am pretty sure you can say whatever on that. Whilst his wall may be set to private, it is still visible to all his other friends, so probably falls under the t&cs that we all agreed to but never read.

Probably, I see it as an issue of free speech personally. I don't believe social media platforms should be policing these things outside of extremes. There's the argument that they're private companies and can do what they want, but like it or not they've became integral as to how society communicates. When you stop someone from speaking on Facebook or Twitter, you're taking away their voice in many respects. That's another bag of worms though, and an issue I feel our government needs to address. I find 'hate speech' laws to be ridiculous, far too open to interpretation and when enacted they often ignore all context. Shy of inciting murder or similar people should be able to say whatever the hell they want, feelings be damned.

People should be being taught to verbally defend themselves instead of going around banning people instantly. I'm sure facebook keeps a record on everything that is posted on that. So it could run a tally and if a person types so many banned words in a 24 or 48 period then give them a ban.

I was brought up through the "special" school system and believe me we said a lot more rough language than that. We'd all be banned if facebook had been around then and we was arguing online :D

Everyone has an insecurity so if people can dish it out then they should be able to take it back too.

I had a Twitter account banned for referring to Tony Blair as a 'slimy, morally corrupt ****'. They never got back to me to explain exactly which term they'd taken umbrage with and why.

On the social media argument, what classes WhatsApp as social media? 2 days ago, my manager asked me to read our company's social media policy. So I read it and there was no mention of WhatsApp in it. I thought that WhatsApp is an instant messenger like MSN Messenger, just newer. You can still direct-message people and you have closed groups, again like MSN. Also refer to IRC, IRQ and AIM.

People arguing and talking about exactly the same stuff that is on my Facebook except I have no idea who anybody is on here.
Of course it's social media.
isn't social media usually just someone voicing an opinion, where as a forum is more of an organised discussion where peoples opinions can be changed by reason

Not on my Timeline, people say stuff and their opinion can be changed with reasoned debate.
I did it about two hours ago, somebody posted a picture of his band in front of a Confederate flag and the singer involved decided his band won't use theirs when they start gigging again.

I know Google is hard, but sheesh!

its on the internet @krooton so it must be true?

alternatively if you google "are forums social media" you get results that back the opposite and it seems people discussing them see social media as something lesser than forums

such is the internet depending on what you search depends on what results you get back.

BTW your google result lists virtual worlds and when you click on it...
A virtual world is a computer-simulated environment[1] which may be populated by many users who can create a personal avatar, and simultaneously and independently explore the virtual world, participate in its activities and communicate with others.[2] These avatars can be textual, two or
[3] graphical representations, or live video avatars with auditory and touch sensations.[4][5] In general, virtual worlds allow for multiple users but single player computer games, such as Skyrim, can also be considered a type of virtual world.[6]

yes!!!!! skyrim is social media! google tells us this so it must be true

Was everquest the first social media in an alternate reality disguised as a game? are chat rooms suddenly social media?

are we all millennials trying to define the world to our liking? do you even avocado, a pub is also social media? caffes? coffee shops? schools?

how broad should our definition be? should it cover any activity that involves people talking/shouting?

we need more buzzwords we can use to stick things in categories

are protests social media? newsapers are social media because of the comments section? how deep does the rabbit hole go
