Same as title,I currently use socket 2011 Asus Rampage Gene with i7 3820

Was wondering if a 1150 is a upgrade in anyway,I was thinking of getting the Asus Z87 MAXIMUS VI FORMULA with a 4770K.

Any help would be great ty!

I wouldn't "upgrade".
4770k have a better memory controler, pci-e 3.0 and you could probably overclock to 4.5ghz...
3820 have 2mb more of cache and probably you can overclock to 4.5ghz too.

and the new Ivybridge-E is coming out soon, you could keep your motherboard if you want to change your processor.

4770K is def an upgrade from a i7 3820, the 4770K has awesome performance, I came from 3960X, to save money and use less power. Tbh the 4770K exceeded my expectations. Great performance at low power use. My preference over any current or future X79 setup.

Haswell -E is when the enthusiast line will start getting interesting again..

Ahhh dude! My head hurts now i don't know what to do :P

An i7 3820 is roughly equivalent to an i7 920 is it not?
A 4770k might be an improvement now, but it seems a waste to get rid of the X79 setup when the IB-E chips will be out fairly soon.

My 3930k takes some beating driving 4 cards @5.0ghz or more using PCI-E 3.0 and 2400mhz quad channel memory. A 4770k would never manage that workload.

Kaapstad, for single monitor use, even when looking to lock at 144 fps (to match monitor), would the 3930k offer anything over i7 Haswell ? Baring in mind the premium for a 2011 setup.

For use with one or two graphics cards Haswell is more efficient and will give slightly higher fps. Haswell's weakness is it's poor overclocking limiting a lot of users to around 4.5 or 4.6ghz. This makes it difficult for Haswell to drive 3 or 4 graphics cards.

To answer your question though, Haswell would be the better choice.

^^ This.

Haswell has very good gaming performance and better price VS overall performance on it's side over X79. If you're gonna be doing a lot of encoding videos and workstation type stuff X79 could be worth it, but if you're gaming and just general stuff like web browsing etc, Haswell is spot on.
