The best person to answer this lot is 8 Pack when it comes to overclocking and memory.

What does IMC mean?

I've heard over the years that people say filling all the RAM slots puts a big demand on memory controllers and limits overclocking, but I've never had any issues with it myself, I tend to always have all RAM slots full.

I managed to overclock my current Q6600 to 4Ghz and have it stable too with full RAM slots, obviously I have no idea about the latest stuff as I'm pretty far behind when it comes to boards and CPUs.

IMC stands for Integrated Memory Controller which is part of the CPU. On X58 and X79 for best results you need to leave 1 slot per channel empty when going for a good overclock.

Can you run the RAM at a different ratio on X79?

Yes on both the Hex cores but I am not too sure about the i7 3820 quad.

On all X79 CPU's you can select several ratios including the 3820K. The BLK strap dictates what speeds are available to you.

Gareth you have not overclocked the RAM in that set up its 1600mhz RAM the IMC supports 1600mhz natively that is a zero overclock. All you have done is raise CPU frequency thats all. As you get higher mhz on the CPU evan 1600mhz for 64gb becomes difficult on a lot of boards or with a lot of CPU do to driving strengths and IMC.

I didn't claim to have overclocked my RAM - it's just running with XMP profile @ 1600.
I'm happy with the CPU @ 4.2GHz for now, stability is my primary concern along with a quiet system.
