I want another skt. 754 chip, I seem to remember there were 3200 Venices out a while ago (?) I have seen this one reasonably priced ADA3200AI04BX is it any good? If there are any good Semprons I would consider that too. Has to be quite cheap, under £100.
Thanks.

Buy yourself a cheap sempron 2800+ and overclock the thing to 2.7GHz if your mobo is up to it.

The extra cache the venice/newcastle has doesn't make too much difference and spending £100 on soc 754 is not a good idea at this stage, esp with the price war happening on cpu's

Get a 3000+ or a 3200+ venis

Edit :

Whatever you do avoid the newcastle cores as they suck at overclocking (i needed 1.7v for 2.5ghz)

I reckon you are right mofo's, I will do that, I should just go 939 though ;)
Nah... Either go AM2 or stick with 754. The later will outlive the 939, which is already being phased/axed out

Damn, is it? I am well out of touch with what's going on these days (in more ways than one lol).

There are no cheap 3700's on 754 anymore. They have been going for ridiculous prices and the only place i have seen them is at auction. No online retailers have more than 3200/3400 if you are lucky instock. Even an overclocked Sempron is no match for a A64 on 754 or even AM2 for that matter. They have less cache and have different architecture to the A64 cpu's. If you can find one then get a Venice which should be a damn fine clocker.

I take it you are already on 754 and have the neccessary mobo etc. If not then it is a good(ish) time to upgrade. 939 is a waste of time unless you are already on it with a low powered cpu. Only then is it worth picking up one of the cheap 939 cpu's as you will be buying in to another dead end with no upgrade option. AM2 has little advantage over 939 performance wise. Maybe this will change with the 65nm cpu's when they are launched. The way to go seems to be Conroe which is showing large performance gains and very good overclocks.

lol , i'm sure in the distant past there were people saying " skt 754 was pants, go 939 ).

how times change ;)

quite happy with my a64 ( 754 ) 3700 :P

what mobo do you have - it may take a mobile cpu - I just bought a Turion ML-40 for £100 + P&P from Hong Kong - works a treat and will use less power than a 3700 - which is a rare and expensive beast these days. I'm presently running it at 2.6GHz - but will tone it down to 2.4-ish when it goes under the TV as an HTPC.

The NF3 and Newest Nforce 430 mobos seem to work best - I have the Asrock K8NF4G-SATA2.

I suppose it also depends on what you have now - you say "another" - is this in addition to an existing cpu or as a replacement. Fine if the former - but if the latter, then will you notice the difference ?

I have 3700 that I took the lid off and ever since is running hot (don't ask me why  Some problem with my slk-948 I think )
I was thinking of getting something with a lid so I could go back to a clip-on heatsink-however nothing will be as good as the 3700 even though I am running at stock due to temps. It is hitting 50c under load with vcore set to auto (1.4v) and it is just ******* me off.
I have tried replacing the IHS, not glueing it down but applying AS5 to the chip and keeping it in place with the heatsink, I get similar temps either way.

No swearing.

I've got an A64 3200 (S754) "Newcastle" thats been running for months at 2.5ghz at stock volts. I haven't bothered trying to push it any higher 'cos it does everything I ask of it. I've had this chip for about 18-24 months now so maybe the earlier ones were better than the later ones.

I've been running with a 754 3700 for well over a year now. S939 was expensive at the time but I'm still glad I went down the 754 route.

Mine runs at 2.5Ghz with an Asrock K8NF4G-SATA2.

Stowenrat,

If you took the IHS off your cpu it is probably overheating due to the HSF not quite sitting on the core. If i remember rightly you have to mod the retention bracket or the HSF itself. There's a thread on here somewhere.

I just recently managed to get hold of a 3700 socket 754 for a reasonable price (I paid just under £100 for it and thought I was lucky). I have to say that I'm well pleased with the performance and see no reason why it shouldn't last me another 12-18 months.

Like you I was considering a 3000/3200 754 Venice until I found the 3700. Its apparently not unusual for the Venice core 754 chips to clock to 2.7Ghz or possibly even higher. I might still get one of them for my second system just to see what it will do.

Long live socket 754, theres still plenty of life left in it if you ask me :D

Hi mate I have an SLK-948U so that problem doesn't occur.
When I first took the lid off my idle temp was about 30c clocked now it is 40c with everything at stock and 50c load. I really do not why.
It is still pretty fast but it winds me up that I do not know what the problem is.

hehe Ill join in on the smug thread, yeah I saved myself £100s by going the 754 route, loads of people said im mad, spend the extra on 939 tech. Been very happy with it. As we all know, whatever you buy is just as out as date as the next chip in a year or two anyway, so may aswell go for the cheaper!

Well said mate.

I've got 2 socket 754 setups and can't fault either of them :)

This has turned into a smug thread has'nt it? :D :D

I said all along going to 939 was a waste of time and everyone was saying i am mad or stupid when i went Sli on 754. Now they are all proven wrong.

I really can't understand your problem Stowenrat. You should be seeing temps drop 2-4 degrees, not a big increase as you have. Very puzzling.
