Hi Guys

I've got a bit of a poser that I cant work out. Its between two processors for a socket 754. I'm trying to figure out which one would give more performance for just sheer gaming. I'm planning to overclock them so I'm not worried about the actual speed.

Athlon 64 Venice (90nm) Core at 2.4Ghz, 512KB L2 Cache, and SSE3

Athlon 64 Clawhammer (130nm) at 2.2Ghz, 1MB L2 Cache, No SS3

I know the L2 cache can make a lot of difference but at the same time I'm not sure how much more performance the SSE3 would give on the venice core.

Which one to choose!

Thanks

Kosch

Venice would have the edge, the L2 cache on AMD cpus dosen't make a world of difference, also the Venice would be much more overclockable in theory.

venice all around, better overclocker, cooler running, plus its clocked higher by default so if your not overclocking it should be faster :)

A 2.4ghz Venice on 754? Is that at stock or overclocked? The only 2.4ghz cpu's on 754 are the 3700+ and they are all Clawhammers. The only Venice's are the 2ghz 3000+ and the rare 2.2ghz 3200+ but they are both extremely rare now as they are no longer produced. If you do find one expect to pay a premium for one.

There were 2 versions of the 3400+, a 2.2ghz, 1024kb L2 cache Clawhammer, and a 2.4ghz, 512kb L2 Cache Newcastle. I had a Clawhammer and the thing would only clock to 2.4ghz.

I also had a 3700+ Clawhammer and that would easily clock from it's stock 2.4ghz to 2.8ghz.

There is a 2.6ghz mobile 4000+ on 754 but even those are quite rare and are extremely picky about what motherboard they will run in.

I believe the 3400+ Venice was never released. Certainly never in this country anyway and i have never seen mention of one on any forums. Pity as it should have been a good performer.

If you can source a Venice 3400+ for the same price, grab that over the clawhammer for sure! Lower power consumption, SSE3 and overclockability. Can't go wrong.

I'll agree with the statements above about the venice

The 3700+ Claw I've got is a good chip and clocks fairly well on water, but I've not had much success with clocking the lower clocked 754 chips.

iirc the 3400+ Clawhammer (2.2ghz 1Mb Cache) was never much of a clocker, some were lucky to get 2.4ghz.

If I had the choice between a claw against a newcastle / venice of the same speed, I'd choose the claw. But if I wanted to buy a 754 chip for the best performance, I'd choose the venice purely because of the higher clock speed potential.

I have just bought a 3400+ Newcastle which is running at 2.4ghz standard.
It has 512KB L2 cache just like the Venice, hence the 2.4 Ghz clock speed, the clawhammer has 1MB so gets 2.2 Ghz (though I believe there are some 2.4 Ghz 512KB 3400+ claws too).

I eat my own words then. That is the first one i have ever heard of though. If it came out of a HP i wonder if it was a limited run. Don't suppose we will ever know now.

That does'nt matter right now. What matter's is...........................Get clocking and tell us what you can get out of it. :D :D :D
