Socket 775 closed loop liquid CPU cooling options?

Hi all,

As I wait for Haswell I am contemplating an old 775 systems final upgrades.

This is an old Asus Maximus II Gene with an Intel Q9550 cpu (and a spare E8500). When overclocking my BeQuiet Advanced air cooler fails at 3.5Ghz, the CPU overheats, so the system shuts down.

So I am looking for a better CPU cooling solution for this system. To be honest I had thought of the Corsair H80i but it has no 775 plate.

The case is a Silverstone TJ08B-E and limits me to mounting a closed loop liquid CPU cooler with a 120mm fan on the case's rear fan mount.

So has anyone got any suggestions?

I know its an old system, but I want it to last until there are options in Micro or Mini motherboard choices for Haswell CPU's.
If I overclock it will help.

Current upgrade choices for this old PC will also be a Samsung SSD and either a 7800 or 7900 series AMD GPU.

This was my old HTPC, that got pressed into service when another PC had problems. It will be passed to my son for gaming when I build a new PC later in the year.

The old 775 PC,
Asus Maximus II Gene 775 motherboard.
Intel Q9550 CPU. (Currently stock due to cooler failing at 3.5Ghz)
Be Quiet Dark Rock Advanced CPU cooler.
Corsair Dominator GT 1066c5 2x2gb memory.
PowerColor SCS3 HD5750 1GB. (Or the HD4870)
Samsung F3 500gb HDD + WD 1.5tb Green for storage.
Silverstone TJ08B-E case.
Corsair HX-450w PSU. (Also have Seasonic 650w or BeQuiet 630w available)
BenQ XL2420T 120hz 3D monitor (1920 x 1080).
Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

I'm in a similar situation to you, but a few months ahead by the look of it. I'm still on a Q9550 (C1), and spent <£100 in the MM recently to set up a complete custom watercooling loop, complete with 360 radiator. It's overkill for this, but means I've got a setup that can sit at 3.4Ghz without batting an eyelid (1.25v, 50C full load), and a cooling system that I can keep using for newer chips too.

There's no reason why you couldn't go the same route (although with a 120 rad given your apparent mounting constraints), and it might be a more useful long term investment.

That TJ08-E is very Flexible.. I know i have one.. :)

If you want to get a CLC, id go for the H80 (H80i).. It will fit and performs really well..

Or for similar performance you could get a big Air cooler, the D14 to be precise..

This is my Tj08-E + D14: http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18488175&highlight=d14

Another options is a custom loop, Pricey but worth it: http://www.overclock.net/t/1068487/silverstone-tj08-e-owners-club/2180

EDIT: I just saw your rig on the same page i liked you too in the TJ08-E owners Club. :), Fate is a funny demon. :)

I would stay air or go custom loop. I don't think these CLCs' will last the years some of us keep our systems. Complete CLCs' cost about same as a custom loop pump or radiator. Only AIO that looks interesting is Swiftech H220. 6w pump vs 2w pump in other CLCs'.. and it's designed to have loop opened for cleaning / refill and expansion with extra waterblocks and/or radiators. Only been out a few months but hearing no complaints is a good sign.

Definitely looks to be a great system. Sorry, wasn't thinking about you needing smaller radiator. Too bad they don't have a 120mm or 140mm radiator version. Maybe they will do one in the future but for now they can't keep up with demand for the H220. Things like powerful pump, all copper & brass radiator and being able to expand as needed make a a near perfect system. Well worth £106.99..

Every time I look into CLC's there always seems to be some negatives.

The Noctua looks huge, would certainly have issues regarding hard drive space, and would like to use the hard drive bay to run two 1tb F3 in a stripped storage array.

So far the only thing that looks like it will give me freedom is a CLC, but new ones lack a 775 mounting plate, and not sure what old ones are recommended.

I can't really remember what closed loop coolers were out for 775, I know I had a H50 on my E8400. Thing never died on me either, used it for years and years.
