socket 775 cpu upgrade

It will run fine, but you'll see no significant performance difference. Besides you can pick up a C2Q Q6600 for around £60-£80 now which is similar in price to the E6500 and the performance difference is huge for certain tasks.

EDIT: There's me not even checking the motherboard, listen to cmdr_andi.

Unfortunately - that board doesn't support any 45nm CPUs or anything much better than your current one. Here is the CPU support list.

Instead of finding one of the relatively old CPUs on that list I would strongly suggest you replace the motherboard and CPU for something new if you need more CPU grunt. Perhaps an AMD AM2+ board and an Athlon II X2/X3/X4.

Yeah i noticed the 45nm and that it only supports 65nm is the c2q 45nm only , also i have a 6420 so not much to be gained really buy getting the older cpuz. Can anyone reccomend a cheap intel cpu and motherboard combo that will make use of my existing case and ram cheers

There are 65nm Core 2 Quad cores, but your board doesn't support any quad cores either- so that isn't an option.

May I ask what make and model number RAM you are currently using?

How much are you willing to spend on a new CPU and motherboard?

currently using ddr2 533 i think cant get access to my machine at the moment as its currently on camp purchased of a mate who was upgrading not sure about budget as little as pos really between the 100-150 mark

In that case I would suggest this motherboard and this CPU.

This will give you a current generation Quad core CPU that works with your existing RAM and is in budget.

Here is a performance comparison between the 2.33GHz version of your CPU and the Phenom II X4 CPU I linked to above.

could you not get a bigger overclock out of that cpu? also noticed your sig says about 3.2gb ram, are you using 32bit windows? if so you need 64bit to use 4gb's or more of ram.

fair due.. i would just get a better cooler and overclock his chip, assuming his board overclocks that is.

In all honesty I don't think there's much you can do other than overclock your CPU to around 3GHz or so with proper cooling. Your board is too restrictive to go splashing out any money on a CPU upgrade.

I think overclocking is the way to go for now and then once you have enough money consider a brand new system i.e. motherboard + CPU + RAM and cooler if need be (likely too). Having said that a new graphics card would also be best.

Should you decide to take up the path above then before buying anything post your best picks for a second opinion, it pays to buy the right motherboard as to open your upgrade options later down the path.

it is 64 bit windows 7 for some reason it wont use the 4gb even though it is picked up in the bios

On the Asrock page for this motherboard it says:

Due to the chipset limitation, the actual memory size may be less than 4GB for the reservation for system usage under Windows® XP, Windows® XP 64-bit, Windows® Vista™ and Windows® Vista™ 64-bit.

So basically you can't address all your RAM purely due to your motherboard. This is a pretty common issue with older systems as 4GB RAM was a heck of a lot when they were released (2006).

thats rubbish i feel really ripped off and u are right under properties in system it says their is 1gb used for system why would they do this any way round it cheers for that info

Unfortunately that's what you get with old cheap motherboards. When the board was concieved 1GB would have been a large amount of RAM, so why make any effort to make it compatible with 4GB or more?

You also can't expect it to be compatible with CPU's that weren't released until years afterwards. Compatability across 775 has always been patchy due to the way the chipset has changed over time.

+1

A much better solution in my opinion.

I built the following setup, as a cheap pc for my sister.

This cpu, might be lucky & unlock it. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-283-AM&tool=3

And this board. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-278-GI
