Socket 775 upgrades

Really??? And with no access to the MM and with other sources of used Q 775's being risky would you suggest he bought a new Q 775? The reality is that an Athlon II x4 630 plus an AM2+ DDR2 mobo keeping his current ram, would cost less, would oc just as far and would have more of a rolling upgrade path.

I think the point you're missing is that a Q 775 is uneconomical unless you have a safe route to obtaining a decent used one. The OP does not have that access. Besides some people just don't like buying used and from his later post the OP doesn't either. Fortunately there is a route open to him that uses new kit, provides just as much performance and oc potential, which is slightly cheaper and has more potential longevity. Simple choice then, isn't it, really?

Thanks VFM Addict and mattyfez, for the interesting and informative points you've both made.
I haven't decided one or the way other just yet, so might just start the rolling upgrades with one of those new 6800 cards, but I will bookmark this thread for future reference.Cheers.

1.The only thing you have forgotten is like everyone here the OP CAN access a Quad from a High Street chain Starting with C, ending in X with a vowel in the middle :)

Current price Q6600 = £80 :)

Research before you shout 'bout it

If it's DOA he can take it back and exchange

2. We buy and sell used CPU's amongst ourselves with very few reported problems. Like everything else in life ... it's a gamble you choose to take or not :)

3. The trade in so called "dead end" chips is still very strong especially in Dual and Quad core Intel CPU's and the more informed realise that they are still very capable gaming/workstation units. And will remain so for many years yet.

And if its not dead but turns out to be an utterly carp oc'er then you can take it back then also I assume?

Personally I'd take my chances with a new Athlon II X4 which is pretty much certain to go past 3.6Ghz, at least, and which I can even rollover to an AM3+ mobo when they arrive, upgrading progressively.

Re your Point 2. That makes no sense. Who are the, "We", you talk about? If you are talking about MM then I've already said that provides a high level off confidence and where open to a peep its a wise move. But all too often I see folks recommending used Q6600's without considering whether the OP even has access to MM or whether the OP would even consider used kit. I see that as akin to suggesting a gcard before you know what it will be used for.

Go for a used Q6600 and a cheap cooler to OC if you don't already have one. Then buy a new cheap mobo for the C2D.

As for GPU, can that mobo do Xfire? I fit can and you have a decent PSU you could get another 4870, if not then GTX460/6850.

OK so what you are saying is buy a used Q6600 even if the OP is not keen on s/hand. And buy a C2D mobo for the current C2D and give that to the kids but hang on to the 4870 for xfire rather than hand it down meaning the kids have no gcard to go in their new C2D mobo. :p ;) :D

Bet you had a great time last night. Don't drive until all the alcohol has left your system........;):D

Changed my sig to reflect what I ve managed to upgrade so far. Still havent decided on the case for the old 775 mobo but would like a micro atx case around 40-50, and a new PSU for myself for around £70 mark. (Crossfire compatible in the -unlikely- event I can ever drop another 150 on a second 6850). Oh and any suggestions for a reasonable monitor for the kid, at around £100-£130? 20"-22" wouldbe great. Thanks for the replies.
