Socket 939 A64 Dual core - all gone?

Danswan, what mobo are you using? Dfi NF4 Ultra-D hates that driver.

For the time being it will be in my Asrock Dual SATA, but long term it will be going in a DFI Nforce 4 Infinity SLI.

That's the Cool'n'Quiet driver . . .

What driver should I install? That's why I was asking for comments/observations

Just install your new multi-core and boot windows. It may be worth having a quick look in the BIOS but apart from that your good to go . . .

Have a play with the PC like that, test some games, google earth etc, if you notice stuttering then go ahead and install the AMD updated driver :)

When I moved from 3500 to X2 4800 I installed the first from the list (the optimizer) as well as the Windows XP driver (second from bottom).

I guess in your case things should look similar. For opterons I do not see Optimizer but the driver for Win XP is the third from the bottom (AMD website/support/utilities

It was quite painless and I am still to see any slowing down due to the optimizer.

Cheers,

Well just having a little play with it - first impressions are excellent.

Im well confused though. With my 3700+ in I couldn't get the fsb past 250 with this board no matter what multipliers or RAM dividers I used. With my new Opty I am currently at 270 and I havent lowered the multiplier at all. How can this be?

I'm certainly not complaining, but if my board is plainly capable of 270+ FSB why wouldn't it go this high with my San Diego in, set to the lowest possible multiplier??

Anyway, I will Prime this overnight but its currently been going for 15 mins and I have 47° on core0 and 43° on core1 according to coretemp.

Hmm

Seemed stable enough @ 10 x 270, Only primed it for half an hour though.

However it was locking up when playing CSS so I eased off a little but it made no difference.

Just tried @ stock at it locked up again. I didn't install a driver, just uninstalled my 3700+ and let it detect the Opty on startup. Should I install a driver? Dual Core optimiser? Or should I really have formatted when changing CPU?

Each new CPU has its own memory controller, this can interact differently with your system . . .

I don't think you need to reformat, mine just plug'n'played no problem?

Have u got cool'n'quiet enabled or disabled? and what voltage are you using on the CPU?

^^ As big wayne says, have you disabled C&C, have you put your ram on a divider? Also when i installed mine i had both the amd driver and optimizer but found the latter to give me bsod errors.

Cool n' Quiet off, Voltage 1.35V. It's PC3700 memory and hasn't been any higher than 224, but like I said this was happening at stock anyway. Memory is relaxed to 3,4,4,8.

I left it Priming both cores overnight at 270*10 and couldn't see any errors this morning, but to be fair I only poked my head round the door on the way to work. Temperatures were 46/44

I'm tempted to just format - CSS was fine with my 3700 at 2700Mhz, and this is happening at stock so its nothing to do with the overclock, could it not be some strange software thing?

The Ultra-D is incompatible with the cool 'n' quiet driver if you overclock.

Sorry mate - at the moment it's in my Asrock dual SATA, but it will be in a DFI Infinity SLI after xmas.

I got the errors when at stock also, using c&c diabled in the bios with the optimizer.

I haven't installed a driver or the dual-core optimiser yet, just uninstalled my old 3700 then rebooted with the opty in

Well if windows detect both cores i suppose i wont matter, doubt there is any performance with or without it.

Aye well anyway, like I say I am tempted to format and reinstall, if its locking up at stock then I could spend days trying to sort it out, a format only takes an hour or so.

yeah thats not such a bad idea, double check that C&Q is 'disabled' and whack a fresh install of windows on, maybe even worth using GHOST/Acronis to back up the freshXP before you start playing with different drivers, then if it goes belly up u can restore your image in about 5-10mins.

I did have an issue a few months back after I had been playing with different AMD drivers where OCCT would flop, again even at stock and I was forced to reformat etc, problem solved (whatever it was?).
