Hi
My cpu amd 64 x2 3800+ is dead, i thought i could just upgrade my cpu getting either an opteron 185 or a 4800+ but i have discovered that these are like rocking horse **** to get hold of aaaargh.

I then thought ok it looks like i need a new mobo and cpu fair enough ill bite the bullet and keep my ram however my ram is pc3200 geil 4gig and apparently this only works with socket 939 mobo (please correct me if this is wrong).

Nightmare! im not sure what would be the best course of action here as i dont want to spend over £200 could you please advise? would i be better of just trying to find some rocking horse **** if so any ideas where the best place to look is? or should i just get a new mobo cpu and ram if so what would you recomend my pc is used mainly for gaming and converting films my graphics card is 8800gt and im quite happy with that its the only sodding thing i can keep by the looks of it.

All help and advice appreciated in advance.

you right, your ram is just DDR, so you will need newer stuff for a new mobo and cpu.

I dont think its worth trying to find a suitable replacement cpu of fleebay or the members market, as any upgrade will be a big difference over what you have been using, and will help remove the bottleneck your 8800GT has had to put up with.

this would give your pc a massive improvement.

could even get the cost down with a m-atx motherrboard and slower cpu

Stulid's suggested build above, really will give you a massive boost. There is a huge difference between your 939 rig and a new build.

On the upside DDR and 939 components fetch a decent price on the bay so you will be able to offset some of the upgrade cost with this.

WeZ900,

I have just gone through the same issue, not gear failing but major heart transplant.

I had an Abit AV8 939 mobo with Athlon 3800+ X2, 3Gb PC3200 DDR, AGP HD3650 Graphics.

I sold all the bits individually on Ebay for £100+ total, typically £25 mobo, processor £25,
DDR £13.50/Gb, Graphics £35.

I bought an AMD hexcore, Gigabyte board with onboard 4290HD graphics and 4Gb DDR3 to replace + terabyte HDD. This cost £400 but you can go cheaper.

I then bought an HD5750 graphics card, but only because I had that money in Paypal from my sales. The onboard way was quite adequate.

Selling your DDR and mobo and graphics card will get you a bit more value anyway.

are you suggesting he sells his 8800GT and uses the onboard GPU? blimey!!!

No, I did not read that his was PCI-E compatible, just stating what I did and the options.

sorry for any misunderstanding.

Cheers for the advice fellas i think ill just have to bite the bullet and go with the rig that stulid has suggested it looks good to me

Thanks again
