Mate's got a duron 1300 cpu but wants to upgrade, is a 2400+ xp(secondhand) any better than a Sempron 2600(new)???

Both seem to be around the same price.

The motherboard will take either.(socket A)

The Sempron 2600+ Skt 754 is clocked at 1.6GHz with 128k cache.
The Athlon 2400+ Skt A is clocked at 2.0GHz with 256k cache.

Although the Sempron is more efficient, I'd still rather have the Socket A AthlonXP :) The Sempron does have two advantages though; 64bit ready and cooler running. You'll need a new motherboard for the Sempron anyway.

Just make sure the mobo will support 333fsb cpus; before getting the Sempron.
If it was bought with the duron it may only support 266fsb then the XP 2400 is your best bet.

The 2600 sempron is ok but couldn't clock mine at all and get it to run stable, not sure how well the xp 2400 clocks but a lot of the xp2500's hit xp3200 speeds.

Just remembered that at the time I had my 2600 Sempron my Dad had a xp 2400 in his pc and the xp was the better chip. Not by much mind but still a slightly better chip.
