Hi chaps,

Ive just noticed the price drops on AMD CPU's. Having just bought a system on saturday, i wish i had seen the posts sooner :(.

Anyway, are socket AM2 motherboards and processors a replacement for Socket 939?, are AM2 motherboards signifiicantly faster then equivelant socket 939 CPU's?, and why do they keep changing them so regularly ;D.

Now that ive built my new PC, can i take it back apart and send it back to OCUK under distance selling regs ;)

if someone could answer one or two of these questions, that would be great.

Thanks

Buzz

AM2 is no faster than 939 really (perhaps a couple of % but nothing you would notice). It was introduced for economical reasons, as ddr2 is going to become cheaper and ddr1 is old tech (despite being just as good, and currently cheaper!).
The only thing i like about AM2 is theres only one socket for both budget and performance, rather than the 754/939 mess.

You could send everything back if you could package it up so it looks as new. I'm not sure if you could send back things like cpus if the factory seal on the box is broken.

Thanks for the reply, i dont think i would send the stuff back anyway, even if i could get away with it. Its just a bit dissapointing to find that i could have got a better spec for less money. I frequent the games forums a lot , but i dont often go to all the Hardware forums, so i missed the price drop rumours :/

Overclock it some more. I find it helps make me feel i'm not loosing out too much as a result of the pricedrops.

socket AM2 if you brought that then theres a very good chance am3 will work, on the same board, plus its only a few pounds more but at least you know it will be in for 2 years thus only needing to upgrade chip.

Maybe but it is very rare that the rest of the system will still be worth it if the CPU needs replacing. I can see the argument but personally I tend to upgrade everything at once which renders the whole "which socket" question as redundant beyond which has the best performance/price ratio, for me at least :)

AM2 isn't currently much faster as said but if you do upgrade CPUs more regularly then you have at least the option and the chipsets for all motherboards are supposed to have more overclocking options as standard to be certified, well at least that is the case for the 590 chipset.

True, Whenever i upgrade i almost always have to upgrade everything anyway, so missing out on socket AM2 etc is not a big worry. I was quite surprised that i could use my old memory in my new machine, normally have to replace that too whenever i replace the motherboard.

Probably 2008 at least or late 2007... Have a look on AMDs website, they normally have their roadmaps on there:)
