My electrician told me yesterday that before he could second fix I needed to plaster in around the sockets and chases so he could screw the faceplates in.

Being a good errand boy I set about doing that today but noticed a few of the socket boxes were quite deep in the wall once I had plastered around them.

Once he puts the plates on a few will have a gap of about 0.5cm-1cm between the plate and the metal box. In my head I can see no issue with this as the screws will still reach and the faceplates will tighten, but obviously I would have preferred if there was no gap, but also wanted to check this was ok.

I think the reason behind it was because he chiselled out a space for a 35mm deep box, but then used 25mm boxes for a number of reasons.

Perfectly ok, done it myself more than once over the years, chase the wall a bit too deep:o, it shouldn't happen & I need to pay more attention though.

But, sometimes if your running a spur, & you need to accommodate the extra wire, or using slim face sockets, which are a little deeper on the reverse, then extra depth & space is useful.

Good.

He wasn't there today and I had visions of him turning up tomorrow and telling me I should have found some way of bringing them level with the wall.

This how my wiring goes.

Instal box
Plaster over
Find too deep as not thought about properly
Use pack of longer face plate screws

It's so common I open a faceplate and sling the original screws without thought now

Its very common and my Sparky (pain in the arse that he is) had done the same in most of my kitchen!

@Nightglow are you a sparky? where in the SW are you based if you don't mind me asking? ;)

Did my C&G Electrical Installation 30 years ago, I keep my hand in around the home only now.

I'm not far from you, just the over side of the river, & close to a canal & pub...
