Just need a quick check. My mate has 2 PC's one is playing up. The PC playing up (PC 1) has a LGA775 (FC-LGA6) processor. His other PC (PC 2) has a LGA775 (FC-LGA4) processor.

Will it be ok to swap the processor from PC 2 to PC 1?

Looking at the socket details, one seems to used on the older P4 chips and the newer one is the of the core 2 duo range.

You will need to look at the BIOS revision and the board manufacturer of the boards to see of the CPU is supported.

Thanks.

What would would happen if we just tried it. Would it just not work or are we at risk of damaging the processors>

Ok the PC that is playing up and has the LGA775 (FC-LGA6) processor is a custom built PC. It has an Asus P5VD2-VM motherboard with the latest BIOS update. Here is a link to the supported CPU's

http://uk.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_775/P5VD2VM_SE/#CPUS

The older PC that is working ok and has the LGA775 (FC-LGA4) processor is a prebuilt Dell. It is a Dell dimension 5150 and has a 0WG261 motherboard.
The best info i can find for this motherboard is

http://www.findlaptopdriver.com/dell-0wg261-specs/

Am I right in saying the LGA775 (FC-LGA6) will not work with the Dell 0WG261 motherboard?

Can the older LGA775 (FC-LGA4) processor from the Dell work with the Asus board?

Looks like you've found the answer.

You can double check this by running CPU-Z on the dell and check the mobo info.
This will also tell you what CPU you are running so you can check if it's ok to use on the asus by looking supported CPUs list.

Then just take the heatsink of the asus and see what CPU it is. If it's a Intel Pentium 4 with HT, 670, 570, 660, 560, 550, 540, 530, 520 you can put in in the dell.

You can buy new budget LGA775 mobos from under £30.

Ah I have realised I have been missing important information. My apologies. I have just posted about socket types and not mentioned what each processor is.

The processor in the Dell is a Pentium 4 3.40GHz

The custom built PC has a core 2 duo something. I don't have access to that PC at the moment.

So thinking about it I doubt an old Dell motherboard will be able to handle the core 2 duo.
