Thread is kinda apt as I was watching David Mitchells Soapbox earlier and he brings up a similar point for all the different words we have for the same thing.

Couch to me is a single seater, but I'd just call that a chair.

Couch sounds way to america to me, I've always called it a settee, because sofa sounds far to "bean bag-ish" to me
