Soft introduction to track days?

Hey,

I'm somewhat interested in track days, my skills are lacking to the point of non existent, but I would love to spend a wee 1-2k on a car with the intent of finally get it on the track.

Any suggestion on where to start... or even potential cars.

I've looked at Clio's, but after having a DCi 80 and my gf having a 1.2... I'd like something different.

I read this and the only car I can think of that is worthy is an mx5.... I literally can't think of a better car for track work at that price. A little mx5 with an LSD which you can fiddle with spend a little money on it and make it silly :)

Other options are of course available depending on if you like engines made of cheese or not.
 
As said you can't really go wrong with an MX5 for track work. Great starting point and for little outlay can be made better as you progress. Don't do what many people do which is buy a car and then start throwing bits at it if you're new to track. Focus on getting quick and confident and then when you start to string together laps focus on making it handle and brake better and then look at adding horses. My 134bhp MX5 race car would suffice for most people for track work and is more fun than my 550bhp road car on any track bar wide power circuits like Silverstone.
 
I have a friend looking to sell their MX5:

1991 Mk1 Mazda MX5/Eunos, 92k miles. Just been MOT'd and flew through. Really good condition, some age related marks and the front bumper is slightly crazed (I gather this is usual for this car). I have replaced the roof, cam belt, it's had a new clutch and I replaced all the speakers inside as well as other bits. It's got a lovely style bar too. It has been kept under cover all it's life. The only things I never got round to doing are the passenger side window motor and hooking up the electrics for the glass rear windscreen. Bloody great fun to drive and cheap to run (classed as a "classic car" by most insurers.) Will be putting on Auto Trader soon for £1200.

Cheers Kindai, it looks perfect...! I think i need to do a wee bit of research first, but if she still has it soon, then maybe!

So any more information guys? Insurance, good tracks (Scotland mainly, but wouldn't mind a wee travel for a day or 2 away)
 
Not many good tracks up here

Knockhill kaimes etc are about your lot

Get hooked up with your local motorsport club and get into some road rally's and autotests in between track days
 
If that mk1 isn't rotten then that will be a decent buy for someone.

I've never taken my MX5 on track but I struggle to see why it wouldn't be a fantastic car to use so I can only echo the previous comments.
 
Not the most helpful post but I love how easy to control yet how much fun my mx5 is around a track.
 
One car that is often overlooked is the mk3 mr2.

They're lighter and more agile than an mx5 and have a lovely balance being mid engined. They also come as standard with a torsen limited slip diff and have the added benefit of not rusting in the same way as an mx5.

If you're doing track days with one make sure the pre cats have been removed and keep an eye on the oil level, I've done 3 in mine now and couldn't recommend one more.
