Hi all,

at work we're replacing ALL our phones and contracts, from O2 to Orange.
We're keeping the same numbers the transfers are being sorted.
I will have 30 blackberrys to apply to BESX, 6 iphones to put onto exchange and about 56 standard phones.
Now, most of these will undoubtedly have some data on them that the user will want to keep.
Seeing as we're changing sim cards the phone users will need to copy their sim contacts to their pc.
Existing blackberry users should be able to save them as outlook contacts and they will then sync with outlook, but they may still have data like, photos etc on their existing device.

So....is there some software that can be installed on a pc and when a phone/blackberry/smart phone is connected you can then copy all relevent data from sim and/or phone memory onto pc storage?

I have a mammoth task of just applying the 30 blackberrys to BESX, when they take a min of 15 mins each.

Thanks for any help offered.

Do you have a small selection of models or is this a complete mish mash of them we are talking about? If it's all Nokia you're going to be OK otherwise... don't hold your breath.

Yeah, going from old Nokia 6230i to new Nokia C2 and C3 phones.
I assumed that their pc connectivity software would do the trick.
The other option if it works would be to insert the old O2 sim into the new orange C2 and C3 and if it accepts the sim then i can copy the contacts to the phone. BUT, it's rarely that simple. :S

edit: as for the iphones that should be fairly straightforward. Configuring them on Exchange 2007 is a breeze. Maybe i can save their sim contacts as outlook contacts (like the blackberry) and it will sync that way too.

Woo you're in real luck, it will be painless but take time.

Nokia software has built in contact export / import with CSV file support too. Use it, don't use SIM transfer. SIM transfer for contact switch is awful because SIMs come with a char/number limit so you end up with

Simon H 123
Simon H 331
Simon H 545

for home/work/mobile etc... because it can only store 1 number per contact entry. You can get SIM backup tools for a couple of quid but they arn't the solution, they are awful (and flippin slow).

As for other files - Nokia actually supports moving them too with their backup option but I'll be honest - be careful here. This is a fairly large jump, I'm not sure it would be 100% smooth and I'd recommend you try it first. It might be quicker for you to run the backup/restore method on it's own rather than contact exp/imp as well.

It might be worth for your ease to tell people it's their responsibility to backup pictures / music on their phones - this would eliminate a lot of problems / responsibility for you when the reception lady loses pictures of her cat. While Nokia's store all their pics typically in /microSD/Images it's possible to override this and store on the phone which you can only really backup by using the Nokia software.

Orange phones will be supplied to you locked but contacts might work - depends if the SIM lock stops the phone working (no idea on C2/C3 sorry) on boot. Still wouldn't use it because of the above but worth pointing out.

It's possible to sync Nokia contacts to Outlook too for what it's worth but this is probably asking for trouble (either by USB or via OTA with Mail4Exchange - Symbians mail sync app). BB to iPhone is as you said, backup to exchange then sync again on the iPhone.

Thanks Myshra, very helpful post.
...when the reception lady loses pictures of her cat.
Lol......sooooo true.

So i take it that the standard nokia software that comes on cd with the new phone will do what we need then?
What i may do in that case, is setup a separate workstation with the software installed and allow users to go up to it, connect their phone and do the do themselves.

Personally, try one of these for the sim contacts.

Used one in one of my past jobs where everyone changed from Vodafone to T-Mobile. Was superb.

As far as photos and such. I'd advise that if they are not for business usage then it's the users responsability to save them or lose them.

Thanks Sharlow.
Personal stuff, yeah, their issue. However some do take site photo's that are work related.

Yeah, those SIM copiers are the things I hate the most I must admit, they just maul your details. Worth noting the nokia's you're switching from probably didn't save their details by default to the SIM - from around 2007 Nokia changed the default save to on S60 in many firmwares and you'd need to check.

http://www.nokia.co.uk/support/product-support/pc-suites this is what you'll need. Do a dry run yourself first to make sure it can see both phones, the protocol again has changed in recent years and you'll need a version that can see both phones.

A potential problem is that the "OVI" version is needed for the C2/C3 and the 6230 needs the classic 7.1 version so you might need to CSV export from 7.1 and CSV import with OVI :( I have got the ovi in the past to work with older phones than it suggests fwiw.
