I currently have 7Tb of hard drives (3x2Tb and a 1Tb) which are sitting in varying degrees of use. I've had them all split up, all my games on one drive, and so on, but that has obviously ended up with some drives getting fuller than others, so I am looking at ways to solve this. RAID is the obvious answer, software raid would mean I could merge the space. Wiping the drives won't be too much of a problem, and with software RAID I could do it part at a time? Copy anything important onto just two drives, RAID the other two together, copy the stuff onto the now RAIDed drives, then add one of the now empty drives to the array, rinse and repeat. Though I would like to add another 2Tb drive to make it a raid5 array in the future, just to add some protection, is this possible?
And is it worth shelling out £60 for an actual RAID PCI-E card? I'm assuming not if it the software can handle everything, but does it offer a real benefit?
And no, my mobo only has two RAID ports, so I can't do it just using that unfortunately.
