Hi,

I wanted to ask some questions from an experienced software tester who are in UK. Please send me a PM or reply to my post and I will try to post my questions to you they are basically just related to choosing software testing as career choice. where to start and what to avoid as pitfall.

Thanks

Manuce

Why? Could be just someone interested in software testing, and thought a computer related forum might be a good place to start.

First post asking people to do stuff for him is a little out of order. He's probably joined numerous other forums just to leech off peoples goodwill. If he'd been a member for a while and contributed then fair enough.

There are no PMs here (but trust email fulfils similar purpose).

An open discussion about software testing - fine. An advert "seeking software tester for career guidance and more" not so much.

As far as I know the best place to start is getting a foundation level ISTQB

With this you will be able to at least get an interview for an entry level/ foundation level tester/QA possition

It also depends on the area which you want to QA/Test. If you are looking to test web sites or apps, for example, then start getting experience on how they work (read up, make your own, get a qualification etc) as how something should work helps when testing for defects etc

Another way is to get an entry level position in a .com company (doesn't have to be IT based) and then start to self teach which ever type of code base they have - C++, Java etc. In house recruiting for testers is generally better as the candidate has a good knowledge of the business already (this is the way I did it :) edit: was a call centre agent, then a floor supervisor, then a training manager and finally a tester. Now working as a full tester in a new company - all in the space of 4 years and I have no qualifications for testing or IT)

Welcome aboard. :)

The PM system is not available to forum members, we have Trust but it's not yet available to you (see the FAQ - Members Market). You will have to use this thread for your questions.

Hey Silver ,

I thought a forum would be a right place to ask questions. If you think there is some better idea please let me know and I can try that.

"He's probably joined numerous other forums just to leech off peoples goodwill."

Looks like you are judging here and kinda jumping over the gun.

JoyJojo, who you think will be a better person to ask other than an software tester who has experience and knows the ins and outs?

I just wanted to ask few simple questions ,what's big deal about it ?

I've just started as a graduate software tester (contracted to move through training and then product/client management). If I can help, drop me a mail.

I've had no previous experience as a software tester, other than a bit of QA during my game design degree.

Or ideally, spurt everything in here, its easier!

Sorry for jumping the gun, but there are a lot of spam posts and people posting asking for things on their first post. If you are genuine then I apologise.

Depends what you want to know really, I did a stint in our testing dept before moving onto dev, you looking at any automated technologies or anything?

Thanks TrixiBuG for some information on that I have been looking into ISTQB Foundation exam lately.

that's ok :) I now understand your situation so all fine now.

I want to do career transition and due to my background in computer science I thought this would be a right choice at the moment, I have more of design background in 3d animation so looking into more 3d games testing on mobile or consoles and since I have some programming experience in Python and C I believe I can do application testing as well, however I believe I need to show some good basic foundation through ISTQB as TrixiBug said just to get an interview call.

thanks

Jack neither I am here here to start a war nor I am expecting anything here. Just wanted to get few simple answers to few simple questions and stay respectful to all member.

game testing pays peanuts, your better off software testing. (job with Codemasters QA = 14k (pro rata) on a 12 week contract (almost impossible to get a perm job), current job = 20k with no qualis, pay rise when i take exams etc and as mentioned a lot of progression, but thats due to it being a smaller company than my last job where I was stuck at a graduate level)

DEV work pays a lot better.

To get the job with no qualis I just applied common sense. Its not hard work, just have to think outside the box compared to devs. Show competence, show willingness. My previous job (qa tester but for ticket master) didnt want any testing qualifications, as they wanted to teach me to their ways of testing. Likewise another job I applied for also didn't think much of qualifications for testing and said it was down do the individual.
However this job made it clear I would be doing exams to get the qualis, and I made sure I would get a pay rise for each one :)

My main goal is to work in 3d/modelling, so im doing this for a few years while i do some projects/my own work / build a portfolio.

Np's :)

The ISTQB is the standard qualification which my new company wants for all testers - the only reason I managed to get a job here is that my experience out weighed the need for it, but they are going to send me (and the rest of the team) for the Foundation or Advanced course anyway.

There was a girl who I also worked with at my last place, who didnt work as a Tester in IT, who is now working at my new place (we started on the same day) as a tester! The only difference between me and all my experience and her (on paper) is that she has that qualification :) So its definitely worth having. Add that to your computer science and your back ground in 3D design you have the ingredients for a good tester

Thanks Psypher for your feedback on this do, I am a 3d artist just like you however I am past the graduate phase so it will be harder for me to get entry position I guess. I think you are right about the DEV testing thing I will try to get ISTQB start applying probably.
