Software to connect to cisco console

I'm being thick. What software do I use to connect to the console port on a Cisco switch and how do I connect?

except I can't connect... I set the port settings to: 9900bps, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit, no flow control. Ive tried both com1 and com2 (I have 2 serial ports) and still can't connect. Any ideas?

dodgy console cable?

short pins 2 and 3, you should get a loopback
....at least you'll know your port is OK

likewise do the same at the end of the cable to check it's OK
