Software to fully wipe hard drives

Hi all,

I have just got my new laptop and as a result will probably be giving away my old PC, before I do this I want to fully wipe my hard disk to ensure no one can get access to any of my work documents and contacts etc.

I am aware that formatting a hard disk does not fully wiped all the data on it, but I have never used any third party software to fully wipe a disc.

Is there any software available for free?
What software would you recommend?

DBAN if you have a floppy drive

The free version of Killdisk runs across the HD writing zeroes and works very well. There are bootable floppy and ISO versions available too I think.
