Software to monitor pc usage ?

Hi

My friend is slightly concerned at the amount of time his son is spending on the family pc. My friend works nights and is worried that his son might be staying up late on the pc when he should be in bed at a reasonable time duing school week.
He asked me did I know of anyway to monitor the use of the computer so he could find out if the pc is switched on at say 11pm at night etc.

No idea if there is a program to find this out or is there a way of getting this info out of windows xp ?

the event log will record start and shutdown times

(control panel - Administrative Tools - event viewer)

Thanks mate just had a look at that and it should give my mate a good idea on the usage of the pc.

It won't audit logons by default, you'll need to enable it by:

Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy

Click on the + next to Local Policies

Click on Audit Policy

Set Audit Logon Events To Sucessful

Set Audit Account Logon Events to Successful

ah, true,
if you don't do that, you'll just get a bunch of system stuff
happening at around the time he turns the PC on/off.
Not so obvious.
