With 1 week to go, I'm surprised that the news outlets aren't covering this story yet. It's still all war and politics with the occasional amber weather warnings in the mix. The BBC does have a story but it's tucked away in the Science section.

It will cover the Sun by at least 90% anywhere on the British Isles, with Scotland getting 91% and Cornwall getting 96%. The greatest eclipse will be at around 19:10. For anyone aged in their 40s or over, which is the majority of this forum :p , this will be the largest eclipse for the remainder of our lifetimes.

The last major eclipse was on 15.Mar.2015, with 80% or above everywhere and the last totality (seen in Devon and Cornwall) was on 11.Aug.1999.

What do you remember from the 1999 eclipse and what are your plans for this year's?

For 1999, I knew years in advance and pencilled in a stay at my Devonian grandparents in 1996. So they saved the date and we walked up a local hill that had a TV mast. The weather was overcast, like with much of the totality's path that day. Families took their kids along and when it suddenly turned night, the kids howled like wolves. The whole thing lasted about 3 minutes :D

In 2015, I went to the local park in my hometown Stafford and recorded a timelapse video using a tablet.

For 2026, the Sun will probably be too low for most parts of Stafford, so I might go to the nearby Cannock Chase and film it there from an open spot.

Remember - don't look up at the Sun directly, but it's ok to view it through a phone or tablet screen if filming it, or use one of those bendy-legs or telescopic tripod with a camera thread to mount your mobile.

Will be finding a mountain for this. Will plan once have an idea of the weather.

I can't really remember the details, but if I recall, a group of us were hanging out at a friend's place and we walked up a hill nearby to watch it. Was quite the experience given that it was my first time seeing something like that.

For this year, we might venture out to a hill nearby. Got a couple near us.

I remember the 99 one. I would have been 11, my gran was at our house watching me and my sister and I was out down the side of the house in the garden when it happened.

Weird the things you remember!

We were in Portugal for the 1999 one, remember being out in a town and some market stalls let us use their fancy specs for viewing it.
Will be in France next week, wonder what we’ll see.

I intend to be somewhere out in the fens with an uninterrupted view to the horizon and a telescope (with filter) pointing west(ish) - I'll make a video of it.

I just hope the weather gods are a bit more helpful this time.

I remember the 1999 one - it was a bit crap where we were.

The one in 99 was the same day as my birthday, my friends asked me if I had been trampolining to celebrate that day!

Down south here, will get to the top of Portsdown hill as it has the perfect vantage point of the sun at that time of evening. I will record it with my telescope I mean Samsung Galaxy.

According to the Wikipedia article, Paris will get 92% at 20:17 local time, so just a few minutes away from 19:10 UK time.

Higher eclipses of up to 99% can be observed in south-west France.

Totality is in Spain, Portugal and Iceland.

Not as impressive from my location and 50/50 cloudy but still cool to experience.

Thanks for heads up.

Yesterday I read that scientists have chartered an Iberia Airlines jet and will chase the eclipse and stream it live via Iberia's social media (X, Youtube,Facebook, and Instagram). Great for people who expect to be under cloud, like us in the NW.

That should be good - reminds me of the one where they used Concorde to chase the shadow and stay in totality for 74 minutes:
