Hi all, ive just been going through some boxes and found a dvd case with 3 cds in for solaris 10.

Ive never heard anything about it nor have i had any experience with it so i was wondering your views.

Is it worth me banging on a spare 20gb HDD and having a play?

Edit: I will shortly be trying to setup a little web server for eve killboard and storage for a few friends. Would Solaris be good for that or should i stick yo something like Debian.

my linux knowledge is minimal.

It's actually Unix... if I were you I'd find my feet on a nice user friendly linux distro before having a go at this bad boy....has some nice features to mess around with mind like ZFS and such like.

Yeah, after posting i did some googling and noticed it was unix.

Anyone here actually use it?

Yeah, I've used it... although not version 10.

In a previous job at a software company, the product ran on Solaris as well as AIX & HP-Ux, so we had numerous Solaris boxes around the place.

It's an extremely stable OS once it's configured properly. It does have its own quirks and nuances, compared to AIX or HP-Ux, but once you learn what they are, it's not so bad after all.

It's a bit of overkill for home use, but it's a nice OS in a corporate environment.

I had a friend who when he started a new job was singing Solaris' praises. You could tell he had just been on some training course.

He soon changed his mind when he realised it is a hell of an OS to get to grips with [he only knew Windows].

It would seem his managers told him all the nice shiny leaflet stuff about it, but left out the small details, like using the command line and no, F1 wont save you here.

If it is minimal, Solaris is not the OS for you! :D

Also I use it all day every day at work, and whilst it is a great OS, I would not use it for my desktop PC :)

just no, really, step away from those cd's.

installing a *nix derivative on a spare machine for fun is fair enough, but you wont be having much actual fun with solaris.

great OS for what it is best at, don't get me wrong, but what you need is a nice friendly linux distro.

I use Solaris, AIX and HPUX at work. None of which I would recommend for a desktop machine , I would also be quite hard pushed to recommend them as a server now as well. Linux/BSD is better in general unless you got some specific need to be running the others for example sparc architecture.

If you wanna check out some cutting edge solaris stuff look for opensolaris developer edition which is basicaly stripped down solaris 11 and nexenta (open solaris kernel with GNU programs).

Linux for the kids a little bit like the lynx effect.
Solaris the real mans OS more like brut aftershave.

Hehe, Solaris is more like a very, very durable and unwashable stink of cabbage.

I use Solaris10 every day and it is incredibly powerful but not a *nix to start on. Run it on a proper multi-processor server and learn but not for a desktop.
