Hey all.

Recently sold a i5 2500k, 12gb of ram and a asrock z77 fatality matx board through a local selling app.

All the parts were still together as i literally removed them from my system so no change of bent pins unless hes done something.

Anyway, he's contacted me saying that the first PCI express slot doesnt work but the 2nd one does and that he cant get onboard sound to work.

I know for a fact both work fine, although i haven't used onboard sound on that board for a while since getting a soundblaster Z card.

He told me before purchase that hes always built pc's but hasn't done one for 9 years. He was upgrading from a Q6600 setup. Its now come to light that he didnt reformat before installing the new board and he's hesitant about doing so as its a pain.

I'm pretty sure its because of this he's having these issues, what do you guys think? I know its impossible to guess whats wrong without getting your hands on it but it sounds like a chipset/driver issue to me.

He hasnt installed any drivers for the Z77 board either although i told him to try it before the format.

Cheers

If he didn't reformat coming from a Q6600, I'm surprised it works at all - literally so much changed that could be any number of issues.

Get him to try a clean install, otherwise refuse to even "support" it in any way.

Did you reset the BIOS before you sent it off? If you haven't then the onboard sound might be disabled in the BIOS.

As for the first PCI slot, some reports says pressing the clear CMOS button helps.

I did clear the CMOS before i sold it so it should be back to stock settings. He's now going to format it and no doubt ill be kept up to date with it. I'm sure after a fresh install and installing the correct drivers he'll be up and running.

Proper winds me up when people buy things when they clearly don't know or understand it then you end up like this for days on end.

Think ill stick to the members market it future!

Next time you contact the dude ask him what operating system he is using ... ifs its Windows XP then there would not be driver support.

If it works in the first slot during boot/bios then you know its likely to be a software issues.

If it was windows XP, then it would be blue screening all over the place as older operating systems aren't as flexible with large hardware changes then more modern operating systems like windows 8/8.1/10 which would instantly start changing the existing drivers for new ones for the current hardware.

This is why I'm comfortable buying second-hand components, but reluctant to sell them.

I am sorry this happened to you, this must be very stressful.

Well i haven't heard anymore from him so i presume it worked. I think he was on windows 7. Glad to see I'm not the only one who's experienced this situation!!

A family member bought a 2nd hand PC from a local selling app and didn't ask to see it working before they handed their cash over. Anyway of course there were problems with it which I was asked to have a look at. Lesson learned hopefully but in your case I'm not sure what rights the seller would have if parts were faulty or just for general support. Good of you to offer to help though and I'd try to help as much as I could if it were me but be interesting to see how how much help other people would provide in same situation.

I'd never sell anything that i knew was faulty, not that type of guy TBH.

I'll help him as much as i can but the whole reason for selling it was i have a baby due in 6 weeks and just gathering funds for redecorating. If he continues to have issues I'll get him to bring his system over and I'll take a look.

However, i know those parts are fine.
