Hey. Recently started looking at SSD's with quite a bit of intrest, and as far as I can tell the OCZ Vertex drives seem to be the faves amongst people here.

But wondering if sombody was to get 2 60GB Solid Series Drives and link them in RAID 0, would it not be better than getting 2 30GB Vertex Drives?

I know it wouldnt run as fast (but sure miles faster than HDD?), but would have twice the capacity for pretty much the same money. Im absolutelty broke at the moment, so by the time I would be buying them in 2 or 3 months they maybe slightly cheaper, but would still only be able to afford around £250 for them. Considering I would want it as a drive for OS and games, I would want more than 60GB in total lol :p

Or am i missing a massive factor about the solid series drives and theyre actually rubbish?!

unless you have an expensive hardware raid controller get a Vertex / Samsung / Intel drive.
The 60GB is not much more than the 30 making it a decent price per GB for the performance level.
You should be able to get a couple of those for your budget in a few months time at the rate SSD prices are falling.

Either wait until the vertex's come into your price bracket or wait for the latest samsung ssds. The latest revision of sammys is a good alternative to the Vertex's and Intel drives.

+1 What DDDanneh said that the Solids were not really a good series due to the JMicron ontroller and it's issues with stuttering etc.

Since you say your budget is tight atm then tbh SSD's aren't for you, as the controller technology is develpoing so fast that new versions will be so much better and will make use of the soon to be introduced SATA3 technology.

Perhaps once that is released you should then look at getting Vertex's (as they'll be older tech and therefore cheaper) or will you have enough saved to go for a mobo upgrade to take advantage of SATA3?

Atm I reckon £300-350 is about the min needed for a decent SSD setup. That will get you either an Intel X25-M 80Gb, a pair of 60Gb Vertex's or a single 120Gb Vertex. (By 'decent' I mean getting sufficient capacity for OS/Apps/Games and with a sufficiently good controller to work without stuttering etc)
 
Thanks for the info guys. I was wondering what was up with the solid series, nobody seems to have them! Now I know why!

Any idea on when SATA3 boards will start to appear?

Like I said, Im going to have to wait anyway, so hopefully the prices will have dropped or upgraded versions will be available by then.

Thats what I was bothered about. I could easily get a vertex now, but would be a useless 30GB one which could hold my OS and not much more lol. Will wait until I can get 90-120 GB for my money.

tbh I dont see the massive boost in SSD. I know they are fast but honnestly for the price do you really need windows and say 1 or 2 games to load quicker? with no performance once loaded
 
Well theyre silent too, which is another thing! Currently watercooled with 7V mod to all the fans and think the loudest thing in my case is the hard disk haha.

Not the main reason I'd buy SSD's, but its a bonus :p

Have you got a Vertex ? if not you wouldnt really know :)

They are awesome and thats me coming from 2 x Velociraptors in Raid0.

Ditto this! After having had mine for a week or so I had to reload as I had got a 3rd one to put into the array and to flash it I had to boot off an old Sammy F1 drive and it crawled. It was soooo nice to get back to Vertex's after that!

It's like everything computer related - you notice a big speed increase when you first upgrade and soon become so accustomed to it that it takes a temporary 'downgrade' to fully appreciate what you have!
