Hi all

Recently moved into a new flat, we have an RJ11 socket in the living room for our broadband connectivity and we also have another in the bedroom.

I want to get my Raspberry Pi hooked up to a TV in the bedroom. My Pi is used for streaming movies and videos from the Server in the living room. Normally I'd just hook this up to the router and be done with it, however the misses wouldn't like cables running through the flat and we're not allowed to drill through any walls either :(

I need this to be a wired connection due to the quality of video I'll be streaming (and I hate waiting for things to load too).

Is there anyway I could utilise the RJ11 socket in the bedroom to form a connection to the living room router?

The only thing to suggest if you want wired without new wires would be Homeplugs. I use them myself but dont find them as fast as 5GHz WiFi.

I would suggest using Homeplugs as well, I have the 200Mbps variety and they work brilliantly for me. Tested ping difference between my HTPC in the living room near the router and my gaming system in my room and found that they differed by a millisecond. My internet is only able to give me 3MB/s and the homeplugs easily support that speed so should be able to handle any streaming you'd like to do.

I'd recommend these: http://www.solwise.co.uk/net-powerline-500av-index.htm

Thanks guys, completed forgot about Homeplugs :)

Do Gigabit homeplugs exist, and if so are there any you would recommend?

You won't get anyway near Gigabit speeds with even the best of the Powerline adapters.

Many of the adapters now have gigabit ports but you aren't likely to see much over 100Mbps, and probably a lot less.

The best performing homeplugs are the new AV600 variety. The gigabit branded ones don't perform any better than the AV500/600 homeplugs; they use a different chipset and don't manage the same real world performance despite claiming better throughput. I looked into them a while back as an upgrade from the first set I had and didn't go with them because of the lack lustre performance.

If I was buying a new set of homeplugs I would get the AV600 plug as it is the best performing at the moment.
