I have just placed my PC in a new room. The router is upstairs, as was the PC before when I used to have a powerline that worked great. I've tried the powerline downstairs but I'm getting 5mbps so it's useless (7 year old powerline).

So I bought a USB wireless stick (linksys wusb 6100m) and the best I can get is around 15-20 mbps download. If I put my S7 edge next to it, I get upto 60mbs.

Shall I get a higher powered wireless stick or a new powerline?

If you can’t run a cable to the location then can you run one to somewhere close? If so then do so and put a Ubiquiti Access Point on the end.

If you can’t then buy a wireless mesh system.

If you can't run a cable from the router to the PC then new powerline plugs would be your next best bet. Check out HotUKDeals. Personally I don't like using WiFi for my gaming PC, prefer hardwired.

Not sure about the power line, there's different wiring in that room it's newly made.

I have a spare router. I'm going to powerline that to the upstairs router and put it at the opposite end of the house. Let's see if the WiFi signal improves.

Right. Not as easy as it sounds. The spare router is a superhub2.

I've connected the powerline to it but can't get any WiFi signal out. Have plugged it in to a normal port and the modem port.

For the SH2 you need to use the LAN port on it, and disable DHCP so it won't conflict with the main router. But I wouldn't really use the SH2, I would get an AP which is designed for this sort of stuff instead.

It should Suffice, as it's a good placement just above the room I need it to be. I tried it on an old netgear wrt54g I used a few years back but for some reason the speedtest throughput is awful even if I put my phone right next to it. If I connect it to Asus router I get 150 mbs.

I'm guessing I need to plug the SH2 via LAN to my PC and disable DHCP?

Getting all complicated and confused now.

This is my setup:

Virgin Media 150MBS
Superhub 2 in Modem mode
Asus RT N66U connected via LAN to SH2

The Asus is in router mode.

I have a spare SH2 and a spare WRT54G router and a old Devolo Powerline.

Problem is the PC in the new room (connected via USB Wifi stick) can not get a strong enough signal to the Asus.

To fix this I am trying to use a powerline upstairs. One end is connected via LAN to the Asus and the other end to a router in a room right above the new room so signal strength is strong.

The neatgear router is giving very slow speeds for some reason.

I will now try to connect the spare SH2 to the powerline.....

I'm guessing I need to plug the SH2 via LAN to my PC and disable DHCP?

Yes. And if possible set it to a different IP that won't conflict with the main Asus, example if the IP was the Asus is 192.168.1.1, set the SH2 to 192.168.1.2.

Make sure to also download and install the powerline software onto a PC so you can see the current sync speed between the two units.

All fixed, getting max downloads of 50MBS on the spare SH2. Pings of between 10-20 ms.

So it's like: Original SH2 (modem mode)>Asus Rt N66U(router)>devolo powerline>Spare SH2(repeater).

I'm guessing if the powerline was better id be getting close to 100 but it's good enough.

Run cables.

Ask electrician friend for advice on routes. If internal is hard, then go external.

Powerline and wireless extenders always have issues.

You've got virgin, I'm sure they drilled a hole to run their coax cable. It may just be wide enough to thread a suitable Ethernet cable through. Route it under guttering or whatever and find another hole round the back like a drain pipe or something and squeeze the cable through.

Any other method will be far more costly and will never perform as well.

Just did this, £12 cable. £20 labour.

160MBPS download now...
