solved - 2nd netgear adapter won't connect

I have a windows 8 machine which I want to wirelessly connect to the internet using a netgear wna3100 wireless adapter. The first machine (windows 7) uses exactly the same adapter and is connected fine. The windows 8 machine though fails to connect. No idea what's causing the conflict?

To add a few more details, the settings tab tells me that I am connected at 144MBS but when I try to connect via IE to the internet i get a no internet connection error.

Is the machine being assigned an IP?

the netgear applet tells me I'm NOT connected to the internet but I am connected to the router - the IP address is assigned at the bottom.

OK SOLVED - the netgear adapter didn't like the USB port I was using. WHat is all that about then?
