So my Gigabyte Windforce OC 7970 has been getting hotter and hotter over the last few months but only really gradually, I kept putting it down to my already cramped Shinobi case (will be getting a larger case soon). So I piled a load of fans into it and bought the double Lian Li PCI extractor exhaust.

The temperatures were seeing my computer shut down regularly whilst playing games which has been driving me mad!

I finally thought that I would check the thermal paste after it reached 90 degrees and shut off last night whilst playing Call of Juarez Gunslinger which is hardly the most demanding game. The entire core barely had a drop of paste on it, I couldn’t believe it, I applied some Noctua paste I had left over from my NH-D14 and voila the temps have dropped to 60 degrees under load and the fans don’t even reach 60% as before they were on 100%!

I seriously can’t believe I didn’t think of it sooner.

Its cooler over here in Australia at the moment ambient temps inside are probably about 20 degrees, so my card is idling between 32 and 36 degrees.

That being said im sure that will rise nicely if we get a hot summer 35+ degrees.

It makes me wonder sometimes too. I had a hardware failure in 2011 and I had no funds to buy and replace what might have been the problem. So I gave it to a large local OcUK competitor in Porchester for them to sort it out. Turned out to be my Mobo so they changed it and put all my hardware back in.

What really makes me wonder is if they used any thermal paste when seating my Corsair H40, and what brand it could be. Personally I use AS5. My i7 930 is running ok though, 56c atm. When the day comes and I take off my H40 and nothing is between the pump and CPU, heaven help them.

I couldnt agree more!

You dont know a job is done properly unless you do it youself!

In the process of re-applying my stock paste on 2 x GTX 470s. With correct application and monitoring this can only improve temps! Congrats on solving the issue yourself!
