Some AMD 7870 Overclocking GPU and Memory performance scaling

For anyone who is interested....

This will show what you might expect with your actual BF3 gaming performance seperating GPU overclocking from vRAM overclocking, i say might because every card is different, but its still a good guide.

Methodology used, Campaign: Going Hunting. It has a good few minutes where you have no control of the game, it plays out as a story, for that reason its consistent so the performance gain measurements are about as accurate as can be, only that part of the game was used to get the results. Video reference here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_9EtvpMVZM&feature=plcp

Settings are Ultra Preset @ 1920 x 1080P

Because the stock reference 7870 is 1000Mhz / 1200Mhz thats what we will start with.

First GPU clock only

1000Mhz / 1200Mhz
Min 41 - Max 77 - Avg 53.875

1100Mhz / 1200Mhz
Min 43 - Max 80 - Avg 56.983 \ GPU overclock = 10% Avg FPS Performance increase = 6%

1150Mhz / 1200Mhz
Min 43 - Max 82 - Avg 57.856 \ GPU overclock = 15% Avg FPS Performance increase = 8%

1200Mhz / 1200Mhz
Min 45 - Max 84 - Avg 59.397 \ GPU overclock = 20% Avg FPS Performance increase = 10%

Now the Memory only, with the 20% GPU overclock.

1200Mhz / 1300Mhz
min 46 - Max 87 - Avg 60.992 \ Mem overclock = 8% Avg FPS Performance increase = 3.5%

1200Mhz / 1400Mhz
min 48 - Max 88 - Avg 62.584 \ Mem overclock = 16% Avg FPS Performance increase = 5%

1200Mhz / 1500Mhz
min 50 - Max 92 - Avg 64.486 \ Mem overclock = 25% Avg FPS Performance increase = 8%

With a 20% GPU and 25% Mem overclock total scaling is 19.4%

-----------------

Some Multiplayer (48 - 64 Player's) BF3 benches for refrance, All at Ultra Preset 1920 x 1080P

GPU: 1200Mhz / 1500Mhz

Metro: Min 42 / Max 104 / Avg 80.015 FPS
Op: Firestorm: Min 41 / Max 95 / Avg 59.472 FPS

*more to come*

-----------------

I thought i might add the canned Avp bench with this.

1100Mhz / 1200Mhz = 70.5 FPS
1200Mhz / 1200Mhz = 73.9 FPS

Memory only

1200Mhz / 1300Mhz = 76.4 FPS
1200Mhz / 1400Mhz = 78.6 FPS
1200Mhz / 1500Mhz = 80.5 FPS

Missed this. Very good comparison information.

Shows how the overclock actually relates to performance. Always good to know :)

Any chance of getting some Multiplayer? Might show what people already think, or just show there being no difference between SP and MP.

Quite a lot of work, considering there is so many maps and so many ways to die, and keeping it pretty much the same. Have fun =)

(Nice to see the actual gains from overclocking though :))

I did this exact same bench with my 7950 a couple of weeks ago :p

Heres my results so u guys can compare with an overclocked Sapphire 7950 950MHz..

Ultra 4xMSAA @1080p - Card @ 1100/1500

Min, 56
Avg, 71.503
Max, 92

What did u have AA set at?

7870's overclocked aint too far off a 7950 overclocked

EDIT.. Fraps was used to bench btw.. thought i better mention this :)

Ultra preset, so 4x MSAA

Well, your Avg FPS are 7 more than mine with mine having a 10% higher GPU clock, I'm pretty convincingly beaten. :) a 7870 with this overclock monsters a reference stock 7950, but 7950's have so much overclocking head room it turns that on its head once you do overclock it.

Anyway, this is the full video of how i benched it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_9EtvpMVZM&feature=youtu.be

Yes, in time :)

@humbug.. I'd try doing a stock 7950 clock bench but my card wont underclock for some silly reason.. then again now they have 950MHz boost clocks then my factory overclock is the same right? I'll run a quick bench at that later to see how 7950 @ 950/1250 stacks up against an overclocked 7870 :)

I just know its gona be close. I nearly bought the MSI 7870 Hawk over this 7950 but the 3gb vram decided it as the cards were the same price at the time i bought.

Multiplayer is gona be hit and miss i reckon as no two scenario's are going to be the same although i dont get far off my singleplayer bench when i go online.

I dont know how its possible to do an online bench on this game to be honest.

BF3 Going Hunting Bench on Sapphire 7950.

Ultra 4xMSAA @1080p - Card @ 950/1250

Min, 53
Avg, 67.819
Max, 86

and..

Ultra 4xMSAA @1080p - Card @ 1100/1575 (stock volts)

Min, 61
Avg, 78.684
Max, 100

Damn that went up a bit from last time i ran it at that overclock. Maybe i was using different drivers before.. i'm on 12.8+12.7 CAPS atm.

wah, big jump. 3 FPS better than me @ 1200 / 1500 :) I'm on 12.8 drivers.

Anyway, I'm off for my daily round of Metro. (controversial map i know, but good fun)

i'd might as well have FRAPS running while i play. this is just out of interest. it is impossible to bench online because it is so inconsistent, but i will get some air map benches in soon as well.

I added some Avp benches and that BF3 Metro multi-player map, i will add more Multi-player maps in time.

Cool. Minimum of 42 on Metro is probably about right. On Caspian you'd probably be looking around low 30's which to me would not be playable.

Do me a favour - run a benchmark with MSAA off and post the results if you have time and don't mind??

Sure, :) but wait a while, i'm jostling 43 different things for a while lol, i'll get it all done as soon as.

As requested. Single 680 @ 1300/+500

Frames, Time (ms), Min, Max, Avg
52259, 544132, 67, 170, 96.041

Operation Firestorm: C64 - full Ultra settings.

Got everything in except Jets as some gits were hogging them. Had attack helicopter/transport helicopter. Tank battles, C4'ing a tank and then general Infantry play around C, B and A.

Yeah that's a decent enough run

My 680 isn't exactly the norm though.

It's relatively golden... I've seen ones performing around 10% slower at the same-ish clock speeds

I bloody well paid for it though :D. SLI averages are ludicrous. But if anyone is buying 680 SLI for single screen they're crazy.

Later on when they come down in price, get another for some 120Hz 3 display ultra goodness.
