I'm a bit confused, i've just got an Xperia and its my first smart phone so I have a couple of basic questions that I hope you can help with

I want to link up to my Yahoo email, on Yahoo's website it states that I go to Android Market, seach for "Yahoo! Mail" and download it.
When I connected to the market I had to set up a Gmail account which was fine I did that, I searched for Yahoo! Mail and all it came back with was what looked liked an unofficial app by someone called Roid? Is this what i'm supposed to use?

Is anyone actually using it and if so does it actually check email for you and notify you of new mail or is it just going to be a shortcut widget thing to Yahoo's mail website?

If its the former do I need to have Background Data always enabled and Auto Sync and will that get expensive?

I hope this makes sense i'm new to this Android stuff

Thanks

Thanks

I've tried the email icon, it doesnt work, it just says "authentication error" when I enter my Yahoo account details

I'm on a 500mb contract, leaving on Back Ground data so this Roid Yahoo thing can check for emails wont even scratch the surface of that will it?

Thanks, i've tried setting it up manually and through ROID and neither work, I dont understand what i'm doing wrong, ROID says... "checking incoming server settings" then fails

I dont get it, i'm looking at the market right now and all thats available is the ROID one, I cant see an official Yahoo! Mail its so frustrating! Is it because I have an Xperia Mini running 1.6 do you think?

Ok maybe thats why, surely i'd still be able to see it though and it just wouldnt let me install it. I think I can upgrade I remember Sony saying they will be releasing an Xperia Mini specific Android update, how do I attempt to update it?

Does Yahoo not have exchange servers you can configure a mail client to access? Failing that there's always POP or IMAP?

Not that I know of, i've tried the pop and IMAP settings using the default mail client but when I try to verify settings it fails :( However finding Yahoo Mails official Pop and IMAP settings on the internet isnt particulary easy, its almost as if they dont want you have them, i've tried all sorts of combo's off forums but no joy

Can't find anything on IMAP but this is for POP from the Yahoo help pages:

Code:
Incoming Mail (POP3) Server:	pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk
Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server:	smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk (use authentication, optionally use port 587)
Account Name/Login Name:	Your Yahoo! Mail ID (your email address without the "@yahoo.com")
Email Address:	Your Yahoo! Mail address (e.g. [email protected])
Password:	Your Yahoo! Mail password

I'm fairly sure i've tried that combination of settings but i'll try it again as you found it on the official site where as I didnt

You will have to upgrade to Yahoo Mail Plus if you want to have your mails forwarded (log in to your Yahoo Mail account, go to Options> More Options > POP & Forwarding).
It's about $20 per year.

You dont need to upgrade you can do it with the standard account

Tried this but its the same, it actually goes out and checks when verifying settings but then comes back with, "could not verify" settings

110 doesnt work either, its trying as before it failed straight away, with the above settings it thinks about it then fails.

I think thats the next step, i'll get a wireless router hooked up in work and try it, if I connect it to a wireless router will automatically default to wireless for this type of thing until its diconnected or do I have to change something?

Thanks for all the help BTW

I had a lot of difficulty with getting my Yahoo mail set up as my default account in the standard email client, too.

Finally got it working with these settings, using IMAP:
Incoming: imap.mail.yahoo.com (port 143)
Outgoing: smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com (port 587)

Note that for some reason this only works very intermittently over wi-fi, but it works perfectly over HSDPA/G/3G/etc.

Thanks but doesnt work :(

Its set like this

Incoming server

Server type = IMAP
Server address = imap.mail.yahoo.com
Username = *******
Password = *******
Encryption = No
Server port = 143

Outgoing server

Server address = smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com
Username = ******
Password = ******
Encryption = No
Port = 587

Then press verify and it fails

Oh. That's annoying. I don't know if your ports will be different on a different phone (I have a Galaxy S)? I just left mine at the defaults (which are the values I wrote in above). It might be you need to try those IMAP/SMTP settings with the default ports for your phone (i.e. the ones it has in when you first come onto the set up screen).

Another possibility (and I hate to ask... :)) - for username, you're just putting what comes before the @yahoo, right?
(I know, I know, but I've made the error of including the whole thing before now...:o)

Otherwise, I really don't know. I fiddled around with my settings for ages before I got these to work, and even now it won't work half the time if I have wi-fi switched on. So it's not as if I actually really know what I'm doing! :)

Yes its extremely annoying! I've been messing for two days now!

I've changed my ports that many times I forgot what the default values are but I can reset it anyway. I'll try that next.

Yeah I dont include the @yahoo bit although I did at first! :o

I've now tried it with wifi and it still doesnt work, i'm at a loss with it now :(
