Some buying advice please!

So the wifes birthday is coming up and you know what they say, "happy wife, happy life". She dropped a hint the other day about buying her a camera but not any old camera, a digital SLR I think they are (you may have guessed, I have absolutely no idea about cameras).

I suppose what she needs is beginner friendly of a decent quality, what I need is relatively wallet friendly /cough £150 ish.

Is it even possible for that budget, I don't know but let me know what you think?

I agree with the bridge camera idea and your right there is the chance of it of ending up in a draw gathering dust. So any recommendations?
