Some are passed simply as folklore, as sayings and beliefs from ancestors. In Russia, if a bird poops on a person, vehicle, house, or any other belonging, it is seen to mean that the person will receive riches quite soon. It can even be believed to multiply if there are several bird droppings.

About 80cm
We think it was done at night as we only noticed it in the morning (weren't woken by a thud) and presumed it was an owl chasing after a bat, however...
If so then it's a likely candidate, pigeons are quite greasy birds. Thought it could be a buzzard but they are a lot bigger.
We did search for the bird in case it was injured but found nothing in the area.
