You cant 'stay away from' chords i'm afraid, unless everything you want to do is based around solos which will be out of your ability at the moment!

i know but i havent been taught, or have taught myself chords yet, i am working through a book at the minute which at the moment hasnt got onto chords

im willing to attempt chords though, so any easy songs at all then :p

B.B King doesn't play chords at all in his music. Although as Chronos-X pointed out you will not be able to stay away from chords.

go to ultimate-guitar.com and search for your favourite song. Find the version of it with the most stars next to it (most accurate) then post it on here and if you're lucky someone will take you through it :)

To play 'rock' you will need to get to grips with your guitar first.

I suspect a lot of people will be crying out 'Smells like teen spirit', but realistically, you have been playing guitar for less than a month, so try something a little simpler first :)

I would recommend any '3 chord' song book to get you going, you will be suprised at just how many non-guitarists you can wow with a two chord (e/c) version of 'Elenor Rigby' :D

However, if you feel like you are ready to 'rock', go in for some Nirvana (Smells like teen spirit and 'In bloom' spring to mind), or maybe some Oasis chord sing alongs.

Good luck, and tell us how you get on :)

Back in Black by AC/DC is always a good beginner, you'll get 3 decent open powerchords in there which you'll see all over the place in most rock.

You can play the entire of My Baby Is A Head*** by the Wildhearts with just an A, a D an... Eh, E or Em, I forget. E I reckon. Course, that's not much use if you don't like/know the wildhearts ;)

My tip- detune low E string to D. Now you can play a single-finger powerchord across the bass strings. This is how they did nu-metal, but don't hold that against it, it gives you an instant 20 chords plus lots of fun with hammer-ons. It's not good practice exactly, but you can knock out loads of songs this way, and it'll help you get to grips with the guitar while not playing boring rote exercises. Good enough to fool non guitarists

(if you try this, play 2nd fret, 7th fret, 4th fret, 5th fret, 10th fret- can you tell what it is yet?)

Whilst its not something I'd instantly push a new player before, I do think 'dropping' to D is somewhat unfairly 'flamed' by the guitar community. Its very fun messing around in Drop D. However, steer clear of converting songs in a standard tuning to drop D tuning, you will just be cheating yourself :p

Yup... I suggest it, because so many new players get bored/frustrated with not being able to make any recognisable noises :) It certainly got me out of a rut. And once I'd got it out of my system, I'd built up some skills and doing things properly came easier.

1 thing that got me with chords is my first guitar never stayed in tune so they always sounded bloody aweful lol. Lesson in life = tune your guitar.

lots of oasis stuff is pretty simple :) try wonderwall

or for no chords, try 7 nation army or come as you are, both beginners faves.

ill have a look into

oasis
greenday
possibly nirvana

have been just playing around with some tabs i have found, a few of the metallica songs have pretty easy intros so have just been doing them over and over until they sound right :P

also got the first bit of RHCP - tell me baby, its only a few notes i know but i was happy with myself for being able to play it :D

cheers for the input though guys ill let you know how i get one, full day off work tomorrow so oging to really sit down and try some stuff

my guitar is definalty in tune as well i tuned it then my mate just tweaked it so its pretty much perfect for the time being :)

"Drop-D and wing it with Barre Chords..."

They're not Bar chords they are Power chords.
Nitefly is right though this is the easiest way to get a good sound from a guitar. Personally i don't detune i just avoid the E whilst thrashing at it. Loads of Overdrive for sustain and a few power chords and you'll sound great. Alternate your practise between proper bar chords and fret work and concentrate on rythm with your right hand. Drop back to the power chords and overdrive when you get bored just for fun and rythm practise.
As for tunes just search around for Three chord tricks there are millions of them, also look into guitar tab as it is easy to understand and pick up.

If I had meant power chords, I would have said power chords.

I meant Barre Chords....So I said Barre Chords.
