Whilst its not something I'd instantly push a new player before, I do think 'dropping' to D is somewhat unfairly 'flamed' by the guitar community. Its very fun messing around in Drop D. However, steer clear of converting songs in a standard tuning to drop D tuning, you will just be cheating yourselfNorthwind said:My tip- detune low E string to D. Now you can play a single-finger powerchord across the bass strings. This is how they did nu-metal, but don't hold that against it, it gives you an instant 20 chords plus lots of fun with hammer-ons. It's not good practice exactly, but you can knock out loads of songs this way, and it'll help you get to grips with the guitar while not playing boring rote exercises. Good enough to fool non guitarist

Nitefly is right though this is the easiest way to get a good sound from a guitar. Personally i don't detune i just avoid the E whilst thrashing at it. Loads of Overdrive for sustain and a few power chords and you'll sound great. Alternate your practise between proper bar chords and fret work and concentrate on rythm with your right hand. Drop back to the power chords and overdrive when you get bored just for fun and rythm practise.
As for tunes just search around for Three chord tricks there are millions of them, also look into guitar tab as it is easy to understand and pick up.
