Some good fantasy series (books)?

Since this thread I've read the A Song of Ice and Fire series and I'd HIGHLY reccomend them. They are amazing! :D

I've just started Magician by Raymond E. Feist and I'm about halfway, really enjoying it so far :D

Expect the last book in the wheel of time series next year... (I've only read the eye of the world)

Have you finished assassin's apprentice? The first book in the far seer trilogy? It is an amazing trilogy, I know you don't like her writing or just not keen but it is touching and is great. (I'm just a fan boy probably :p)

Oh I don't know, I've just finished the two Farseer trilogies myself and I think they'll stay with me for quite awhile.

The "Memory, Sorrow & Thorn" trilogy by Tad Williams. I can't rate it highly enough - miles better than his (IMO) yawn-inducing Otherland series. Easily my favorite fantasy series next to LotR.

Elenium/ Tamuli
Belgariad/ Mallorean

As you like these, I would HIGHLY recommend The Redemption of Althalus by the same author (And his wife). Entertaining read, massive book but I have read it about 5 times and it always flies by.

Dragonlance:
  • War of the Lance series
  • Time of the Twins series
  • All subsequent Hickman & Weis novels that follow the main story ark of Krynn
Forgotten Realms:
  • Cleric Quintet
  • Icewind Dale
  • Drizzt Saga, (lots of books, Icewind Dale is a part of them)
Dark Sun:
  • Prism Pentad
  • Tribe of One (just plain ****ing awesome in every respect)
David Gemmell:
  • Every book written by David Gemmell (IMO the greatest writer of heroic fantasy EVER) in chronoligical order following the prescribed timelines.
That should do for now. ;)

Very good series, but you really need to be in the right frame of mind to read it as compared to other 'shorter' or faster paced novels/series it can be quite slow in places. Makes LOTR seem like 'Fanstasy on amphetamines'!!

Still waiting for something new to come along, nothing really taking my fancy at the moment. Think i need to re-read this thread and see if anything new has come along.

If you like one you're bound to like the rest because they're all exactly the same. Read "Legend" then stop.

Several people here recommended Joe Abercrombie. I can't say his books are classics, but they're better than most and well worth reading.

Really? I wasnt that impressed by it. (thats the one with time travel yea?).

I am a huge fan of the early David (and Leigh) Eddings novels. Belgariad/Mallorean and the Elenium/Tamuli. Although you have to admit after those two epic series he seems a bit of a one trick pony.

For me the greatest Fantasy novel ever written is Magician by Raymond E Feist. Best series is Wheel of Time by the late Robert Jordan.

OP, if you're around, what put you off these? they're great books.

RossG, The Liveship Traders trilogy has quite a lot of pirate stuff in it, well wortha read.

Cheers for the suggestion. Will try and graba copy of the first book soon. Anyone know of any more pirate fantasy books? I would've thought there would be quite a few around. Maybe I was wrong :/

I'd heard that Robert Jordan had passed away...maybe I was wrong, but I stopped reading after that (got to the end of book 8) as I didn't see the point of reading all of that only for it not to have an ending! Ah well, I guess I ought to pick them up again!

In terms of other fantasy, His Dark Materials is amazing, only surpassed in my opinion by anything by Gemmell! The Rigante series is the best, but the majority of them are all great books. Felt that Dark Prince was a bit of a letdown though, after the awesomeness that was the Lion of Macedon.

Has anybody read anything by Conn Iggulden? I know that they aren't quite fantasy, but both his Emperor and his Conquerer series "feel" very Gemmell-absolutely fantastic books, particularly the Conquerer series. In fact, in parts, it parallels some of the storylines in Legend and The King Beyond the Gate pretty closely-guess it shows where Gemmell got his inspiration from (I mean from Genghis Khan, not from Conn Iggulden)!

He did die, but he had all the notes written out for people to finish, I also heard he recited most of his books to his family or something before he died. It's only book number 12 that is being written by another author. He knew how he wanted it to go, through and through. (for manic111)
