Some good news for Linux gamers

Microsoft had a huge games catalogue before Valve came along simply due to market share. Even in ~1994 people like Bullfrog, Westwood Studios, LucasArts, id and EA were all developing games for MS-DOS, which made them forward compatible with windows 9x.... long before Valve even existed.

FYI the AMD FOSS driver is at 85% and in some cases 100% and faster than the closed source catalyst driver.

on my puny APU i benchmarked 135FPS on the halflife benchmark with the catalyst it was 150fps so not that much of a difference. The bonus to the open source driver is that it seamlessly integrated with the awful x server and games run butter smooth ( smother than i have had on windows) even though the peak FPS is lower.

The PC gaming market dates back to the early 80s, though it didn't really have any relevance until IBM brought out VGA and Commodore screwed up the Amiga (around 1990-1992). MSDOS games then had the market well into the late 90s, as DirectX in Windows 95 was slow and unpopular.

If we're talking about the gaming market today, the consoles pretty much created that. It's probably true to say that Valve has kept PC gaming alive, but it didn't create it.
