I'm a bit of a numpty when it comes to networking :(
So this is my set up TP-Link TD-W8961ND adsl router,TP-Link 150Mbps Wireless Range Extender (TL-WA730RE) and a 300Mbps High-Gain Wireless-N USB Adapter (TL-WN822N) going to my spare rig 2 rooms away
It doesn't need top speed just a good connection.

I can get them to work but I have 2 signals one direct from router which is weak and drops off, one from range extender which excellent strength, but they keep dropping off and swapping over one to another.

What am I doing wrong ? :(

I would put the two devices on seperate SSIDs so that your PC doesn't roam, and then make sure that the weakest signal isn't configured on your PC.

messed it up all together now can't access range extender's home page, I don't know how to assign a ip address to it as i think i have disabled dchp. :(

Here we go, try this:

1) Reset the AP/ router to factory default (sometimes a paper clip job)
2) Connect a LAN port on the router to the LAN port on the AP
3) Log on to AP URL interface (typically 192.168.1.1 or 192.168. 0.1 see manual)
4) Enter user name and password (typically admin the admin)
5) Browse LAN settings, disable DHCP (AP only router will handle the network DHCP), assign static IP address of your choice on the same subnet as router
6) Browse to wireless settings set SSID (user name and password) the same as router

Reboot everything and you should be good to go. :)

Settings should be similar to below:

Set different channels on the router and AP such that they do not interfere with each other or nearby wireless networks (I use inSSIDer 2.0 to determine the best channels) below I'm using channels 5 & 13

Ok done it, I have a question tho in Lan settings now
I have Mac address, F4-EC****
type : static ip
subnet mask : 255.255.255.0
gateway : 0.0.0.0

Shouldn't there be an address in there ?

Here we go spot the idiot. OH Yeah ME!
done it all say it's working but oh no it isn't  says I have conflicting ip addresses and I can't seem to find them :o

All I want to do is this so I get a better signal.
