Well today my asrock 990fx amd board has decided to play dead!

So here is my chance to go intel!! :)

Just want to know so info with sockets etc.

When looking at chips it says 2011/1155 etc but when choosing a board it's z87/ x89 etc and I'm wondering what chip goes with which boards etc.

I would like an i7 but which one???
Are i7s and i5 interchangeable incase I choose a board then change my mind, or funds run low.

Im using my current HDD, SSD, RAM so should be able to free up some funds for board and chip.

So.... And good board and chip combos.
Preferably an i7
 
In the same kind of predicament myself,

From what I've found,

I'm going to be using a z87 1150 (1150 is newer than 1155.. Confusing) board with a i5 4670k haswell and clocking it to something around the 4ghz mark.

First you need to decide on a budget and then decide if you are wanting to overclock. What are you going to be using the system for?

i5 and i7 use the same socket from what I can see.

Coming from AMD (never had an intel) it is all a little confusing.

Someone will be along to correct me on all this lol.

I agree mate, bit confusing.

I want to get some rough figures, mid range i5 prices to top end
And i7 prices. Budget is open ATM just want some good combos with some prices, and experiences.

I'm staying away from asrock!! Lol

Would a top end i5 beat a low end i7?
What's a good overclocking combo too?

The reason I'm saying no budget as I don't know what's good for money or what's over priced and il be willing to look at different variables
 
i5 4670k and i7 4770k seem to be the cpu's of choice (k means it can be over clocked)

Z87 mobo's seem popular also. The gigabyte G1 sniper Z87 I believe is a good shout. Although I like the look of the msi boards also.

There is a thread somewhere comparing the two cpu's. I myself can't justify the extra price of the i7 for what I will be using. Single gpu at 1080p.
 
Really simplified Matt.

i5 & i7 "2" and "3" series (2500K, 3770K etc) use LGA1155 mobos.
i5 & i7 "4" series (e.g. 4770) use LGA1150 mobos.

1150 and 1155 are the physical socket "shapes" for the proccessor to fit into on the board. You cant put one in the other. But an i3, i5 or i7 will fit in the same mobo.

The chipset is an onboard set of chips on the mobo that give certain features like number of SATA ports etc. A 1155 mobo that could run a 2xxx or 3xxx Intel proccessor could be, say, a Z77 or Z68 chipset. Your proccessor would work in either, but Z77 offers a few extra features (no big deal).

So... most important is LGA1155/1150/1145 etc. After that, the chipset (Z77 etc) just defines some of the features offered.

Yeah il be using single gpu. So maybe the i5 might be a wiser choice.
It will have to a 'K' so I can clock it.

The Msi boards look really good as do the Asus maximus vi

I don't need to water cool it, but I maybe would like the option in the future
 
I know the chipset has to match up, so it doesn't matter is it's z89 or z77 or whatever it is ?

I'm guna sit and read into tonight and see what features I want
 
If you are wanting to overclock on the latest cpu's I think you are limited to Z87.
 
Hi there,

1155, 1150, 2011 and so on are the number of pins in the CPU socket. Intel tend to change them every generation or two to stop people trying to put incompatible CPUs in motherboards from a different generation. These number are often prefixed with "LGA" which means "Land Grid Array", which describes the way the socket is arranged (with the pins on the socket instead of on the CPU).

For our uses the socket types important to us are:

LGA 1155 - First came out in 2011 - Mainstream class
LGA 1150 - First came out in 2013 - Mainstream class
LGA 2011 - First came out in 2011 - Enthusiast class

Each socket type is associated with a fixed number of chipsets and CPU types.

CPU generations compatible: Intel Core 2nd and 3rd Generation mainstream (Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge)
Chipsets compatible: Z77, Z75, H77, Q77, Q75, B75, Z67, P67, H67, Q67, H61, B65
CPUs compatible: 2000 series and 3000 series mainstream CPUs (popular ones include i5 2500K, i5 3570K and i7 3770K)

Year released: 2013
CPU generations compatible: Intel Core 4th Generation mainstream (Haswell)

CPUs compatible: 4000 series CPUs (popular ones include i5 4670K and i7 4770K)

Year released: 2011
CPU generations compatible: Intel Core 2nd and 3rd Generation enthusiast (Ivy Bridge-E, Sandy Bridge-E)
Chipsets compatible: X79
CPUs compatible: 3000 and 4000 series enthusiast CPUs (popular ones include i7 4930K, 4820K, 3930K)

I'm going with the

MSI Z87M Gaming Series Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX Motherboard

And

Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - OEM

Then going to add a msi r9 270x

Already have a h80 cooler, so going to aim at simple 4ghz clock.

Just picked up a 350d case which is the reason for Micro ATX. No use for anything bigger.

Now just need to clear the funds and order I guess. This refresh of the cpu's has me in two minds at the moment though.
 
I'm going for a corsair closed cooler maybe 100i or 105
Plus I'm going for the r9 280 so very similar setup to yours mate

Plus with the 1150 socket I could go i7 next year maybe too
 
I went 3570k and H100i with the intention of upgrading to 3770k later. Unfortunately, the I7's hold their value so well they are still near full price. Second hand ones aren't much better. I wish I had got a 3770k to begin with and a much cheaper cooler. I would have even prefered to use an I7 with the stock cooler than the current setup. It would be a pita and expensive to change over to an I7 now. Something to think about
