Am busy extracting UT3 files to install (purchased form Direct2Drive), and have noticed extracting these files (a few gigs each) causes the system to lag a bit.

Cpu usage seems to only hover around 30%, so why would it cause any kind of lag at all? By lag I mean when trying to browse the program menus, it can take like a second or two for Windows to catch up...

Is this normal? I got a quad so that the system would be able to cope with things like this without me being able to notice any difference.

This is Vista 64, by the way.

Handling large files is bugged in unpatched Vista.

Installing Service Pack 1 Beta should fix it. I know it fixed it for me. Although, it could also be your hard drive.

Hard drive. Doesn't matter how fast your CPU is, if your Windows HD is being hammered by extracting files then your system will lag.

Shouldnt happen on XP.

On Vista without any SP beta or RC, its known that it cant cope with moving big files around.

When I downloaded a 3GB demo it took longer to move from the Temp download location to my Desktop than it did to download (took over 20 mins before File was on Desktop ready to extract) the Beta and RC improved this each build.

How To Fix Problems Copying and Moving Large Files In Windows Vista
Filed under: Windows Vista
Although Windows Vista is a major improvement over Windows XP, there is one particular bug that has really upset me which is how slowly it moves or deletes files. In Windows XP there were no problems moving big files. However, with Windows Vista if you move big files even on the same drive there is a long pause while it calculates how long it will take and the actual move takes forever, whereas on XP it is instanteneous.

Luckily, the How To Geek has discovered what the problem is and has come up with the solution for moving and copying large files in Vista. The problem is because of the new auto-tuning network. Once Vista is auto-tuning network is turned off, then the issue of moving files goes away.

To Turn off Auto-Tuning:

1) press Ctrl+Shift+Enter to open the Command Prompt. Choose run as admin type in: netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

2) Reboot

If you have any problems, then to turn auto-tuning back on type the following in Command Prompt:

netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

Thanks for all the input, however, I was not copying a large file - I was extracting them from one drive to another. They are 3/4 gig zip files.

Copying and Moving Large Files

Same thing IMO, my Unraring of files was slow on Vista before any SP1's, compared to XP, now its about the same.
