I am completly new to Over clocking, managed to get some good advice from you guys and got my opteron 146 up to 2.7ghz any higher and PC wont boot.

Just wondering with my memory (in sig) should i do anything with that ? as it has not been changed or fiddled with. I play a lot of BF2 at the moment. and i know that is memory hungry.

Just curious as this is all a learning curve for me.

Thank you

Well there is no saying for certain what your CPU is capable of (or your memory for that matter), but you can probably get more than 2.7ghz from your 146. If you have not altered your memory at all then it it probably your memory that is stopping your system from booting. If you relax the memory timings (that means making them higher) your ram wil probably be able to go further. Do you know what your memory timings are currently? And do you know if you are using a divider (if you don't that means you probably aren't)?

Hi Man from Uncle, I know 0% about my memory im afraid, i have not altered anything. Wouldnt know where to even look. My memory timings, will be whatever they are out of the box i quess as i have not done anything to them. Just bought this memory as I believe it is quite a good make etc

Well in that case you will need to find your memory timings in your BIOS and raise them a bit. Particularly the one called CAS. Try raising it to 3 (if it is not 3 already) and raise all the others by 1. Other than that i'd recommend reading the various FAQs about overclocking and finding out what it all means.

Sadly I am not familiar with your BIOS and I therefore can't tell you what to do exactly, and though I could try and explain it one principle at a time, there are plenty of better sources out there than me.

hi,

go into you're bios and check for the memory clock setting, its in the cpu configuration screen with the cpu fsb/mulitplyer at the bottom.

try it at 166 if that doesnt work try 133, and put MA timing to 1T, switch it back to 2T if you have any issues.

leave memory timings as auto, then when u've booted up check them using cpu-z to give u an idea of what the system thinks is stable so it will give u a starting point for a bit of extra tweaking :).

Lower the frequency (divider) before you raise the timings.

What are the rated speed DDR.... and latency timings for your ram?

In BIOS i get there figures:

DDR 1 512MB/133mhz ddr266
DDR 2 512MB/133mhz ddr266

Cas latency Auto
TRCD Auto
TRAS Auto
TRP Auto
MA Timing Auto

CPU-Z under memory tab

Frequency 180.0 mhz
fsb:dram cpu/15
cas# latency 2.5 clocks
ras# to cas# delay 3 clocks
ras# precharge 3 clocks
cycle time (tras) 7 clocks
bank cycle time (trc) 11 clocks
DRAM idle Timer 16 clocks

on CPU'z Under SPD tab,
I can choose slot 1 or 2 but the only figure it gives me are module size, nothing more.

hopefully some of you can point me in the right direction if i needd to change anything to gain more
