I need to buy a NAS device.

I need it to be able to:

*) Backup to external USB drives (my ADSL is just not up to cloud backup)
*) serve music to multiple devices android and windows
*) serve video to multiple devices android, Panasonic TV and windows
*) allow windows users to have mapped drives with permissions (everyone read access to mp3s, me write access to mp3s, me full access to kids stuff, kids access to only their share etc)
*) Allow a raid 1 disk to be plugged into a linux box and read incase of total device failure.

Any ideas - budget is about £700 for NAS and disks.

Thanks !

I highly recommend a Synology NAS.

1) I have folders that sync to the NAS when I'm on my home network or remotely if I have a net connection, and that then gets backed up nightly onto an external USB drive via the NAS.

2) I use DS File, ES File Explorer and BS Player to access and stream data remotely from my Android phone and tablet.

3) Lots of tools you can use for this on the NAS, but I just have all my devices access the raw file structure of my video folder.

4) Very easy to set that up via accounts on the NAS itself.

5) Yep, people have done that for data recovery.

I use a DS 413j with 4x 3TB drives (Synology Hybrid Raid is better Raid 5) and a 212j with 2x 2TB drives (Raid 1) for reference.

This would be my suggestion, I have only specced 3 x 4TB disks otherwise your budget will be blown. You can then add another 4TB when you have the money or space requirements.

A 3 x 4TB will give you 8TB of space with redundancy, if you add another 4TB you will have 12TB with redundancy.

YOUR BASKET
1 x Synology Diskstation DS414 4 Bay Gigabit Ethernet Network Attached Storage Enclosure £371.99
3 x Western Digital Caviar Red 4TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache WD40EFRX - OEM HDD £139.99 (£419.97)
Total : £801.56 (includes shipping : £8.00).

Sorry to hijack the thread a little but do you use some third-party software to sync your folders from your PC to the NAS or is there some functionality built in to Windows (assuming you are running Windows) that can do this? Thanks!

To be honest I think the Asustor 202TE would be a great option. Not as many mobile apps as Synology but has a more powerful Atom processor and can be used as a htpc

Gone ahead and bought a Synology 414 and 3 4tb WD red drives. Also is it just me or are the prices on OcUK a *lot* less competitive than they used to be ?
