Some Newbie Bike Questions

I got the following

Ebay J F pelle leather trousers with hip & knee armour and knee sliders £80
Ebay Weisse hi vis jacket with spine, elbow & shoulder armour £120
Ebay Maverick knee high MX boots £80
Shoei XR1100 £260 from P&H Crawley
Gloves Kevlar winter £70 Clapham
Ebay Emergency waterproofs £9

They are breathable enough to bear the heat and also waterproof so all I need to do for cold days is put on underlays and when its really hammering put over the fluoro yellow waterproofs

If all I was doing was pootling around London I might reconsider what I'm wearing but I do do dual carriage ways and nsl roads

Yes, if they want it the'll have it, can you lock it away anywhere?

Some chains are £100+ but if it's only chained to a plastic gutter it's useless.

I'd budget £50 for something to deter

The biggest pain is people knicking easy to remove panels and fairings etc

Bike theives are either opportunist or think your bike is worth the attention to steal. Opportunists will be put off by locks and alarms that make their job harder and will move on, more determined theives will come armed with bolt cutters and a van but will only be interested in bikes that make their effort worthwhile. If you're bike is a low spec commuter and you have it secured so that it can't be easily moved theft is probably not something you need to worry too much about. A bike cover would be worthwhile if you're leaving out on the street to protect against the elements.

TBH, I was hoping to get away with a helmet and jacket. Is there really a need for full leathers, boots etc when you're just commuter riding?

Male. Is my choice of bike severely restricted because of my short height?

Yes it is. Not so much the height but as said, the leg height. Women tend to be more leggy than men and so can get away with it a tiny bit more.

good advice here.

i'm looking to get my license. i wont be commuting just want a different experience. i'd be more into cruisers i think

are there people here who have theirs just for this pleasure (weekends etc) was it the best thing you ever did getting your bike license?

do i need to do the theory test if i have done it for my car license?

ta :)

How do you cope in the summer with all that protective gear on? Don't you boil to death?

Missed this before, but yes it can get a bit warm in summer. However I'd rather sweat a bit than have large areas of my skin ripped off by tarmac and require skin grafts. Really bad gravel rash is horrifying, much worse than a cleanly broken arm or leg for instance.

Decent textile jackets and trousers come with a separate thermal lining that you take out in summer, and also have various vents that you can open to get some air through.

As above yea it does get hot but luckily in this country even when its 'really' hot the air is still cool at 50+ wearing full leathers etc..
But that's why we ride bikes really to make progress on the roads so you only really get hot when your stopped for lights :p

As above need to do another theory unfortunately.

There is a good mix of every type of rider on here, ranging from weekend warriors ;) to people who use their bikes as sole method of transport.
And we've got Flukester who rides even when its snowing :D
It used to be my sole transport but got a car after my accident, so now I kind of split my commute to car and bike and until my arm is sorted I dont ride on the weekends or go on track, but that will change soon hopefully :D
