A woman has been mauled by two large dogs which had to be shot, one five times, when Taser guns failed to subdue the animals during the frenzied attack south of Perth.

The 29-year-old woman was critically injured when set upon by two Bull Mastiff dogs after jumping a fence at her mother's house at Mandurah yesterday afternoon to help a puppy in distress, police said.

Health authorities have told police the the woman was lucky to survive the attack and would have died had the helicopter arrived two minutes later.

"I saw the poor girl laying there with all the dogs around her and her mum was just yelling, 'They're eating her'," neighbour Barbara Mitchell told a Perth newspaper.

The dogs continued to attack even after several shots were fired, one policeman said.

"Both dogs received several gunshot wounds, one dog took five shots before it would drop," he said

Police spokesman Ian Hasleby said the woman had climbed the fence and was then attacked by two big Bull Mastiff dogs.

"As she tried to get back over the fence the dogs took hold and dragged her back into the yard and began a frenzied attack," he said.

"The woman's mother took a garden hose and sprayed the dogs in an attempt to keep them at bay as three police officers arrived."

Police used Taser guns to little effect and were forced to shoot and kill one of the dogs with their firearms. The second dog was shot by council rangers.

A third large dog was secured and removed from the yard by rangers.

Mr Hasleby said the woman was transferred from the Peel Health Campus by helicopter to the Royal Perth Hospital for emergency treatment to serious wounds to her face, legs and body.

Her condition today is critical but stable.

A police officer was bitten on the leg during the attack and attended hospital for a tetanus shot.

The dog's owners have yet to be contacted. They were not at home at the time of the attack, The West Australian reported.

Now because this dumb **** decided to jump into the neibours yard with 3 Big dogs that were fighting a little on at the time they are now all dead or gonna be destroyed:rolleyes::(

******* stupid *****!

The dogs were only protecting there territory, fair enough if they had got out of the yard and started eating people, but she went into there area. What did she expect them to do? Sit there and roll over?!

This is coming from someone who lives next to 2 big rottys that sound like lions and have tryed to eat my cats before when they have escaped.

i think i would want my dog 2 scare some 1 , but not eat them, but yeh its her own fault! bless the dogs :(

She was trying to help a defenceless creature and put herself in harms way in doing so. This makes her naive perhaps, and lacking in personal safety sense, but her intentions were clearly noble. Hardly a "******* stupid *****!" as you so succinctly put it.

She was trying to help a puppy so what she did was good, and if the dogs were so poorly trained/looked after that they assault a person like that, they deserve to be shot or put down imo.

Best put down imo (these ones at least) :). Dangerous dogs shouldn't be kept as pets.
All dogs have the potential to be dangerous, except for those breeds bred to be small and fragile (and even those can do some injury).

Dogs are territorial predators with animal intelligence. They are strong, tough and naturally armed. Of course they are dangerous! More people need to understand that, especially people who keep dogs. They are not cuddly toys and they are not people. They will act on a dog's instinct and they cannot be expected to use reason. Under the appropriate conditions for a dog (which a human might not realise are the appropriate conditions for a dog), they will attack. They are also pack animals, so they need a pack hierarchy.

The dogs attacked an intruder on their pack's territory. They were being dogs - what else could they be?

For the OP:

The woman acted with good intentions. If she didn't understand the risk, she was foolish. If she did, she was brave. Either way, she isn't a "******* stupid *****!"

I once took on a Rottweiler to protect my dog. I knew what I was doing - the dog was stronger, tougher and obviously much better armed than me. Am I a ******* stupid *****!?

The dog backed down. It wasn't defending territory or pack, so it wasn't committed to a fight, and I must have seemed dangerous enough for it to retreat rather than fight without enough cause, but I was lucky.

Quite.

I don't think dogs like that should be kept as pets IMO. This happens far too much. Sure they are doing what's instinctive, but what if it had been a kid jumping over the fence to get his ball or whatever? If they had such dangerous dogs out loose in their garden, they should have adequate fencing to stop people climbing in and putting themselves at harms way. Certainly they should have clear warning that the property has large predatory dogs.

You have some very strange view points.

Would you of rather the dogs finished what they started? Dangerous animals like these ones are not fit to be kept as pets

Is it clear whether these are pets of distinct guard dogs?

Well Bull Mastifs are rather large tough dogs in general used for their strength and ferocity, as well as the ability to be trained as guard dogs. I'm not an expert on canine breeding, but I know that something like that compared to a Labrador has a completely different temperament. There is a responsibility when owning a big dog like that, the responsibility falls on the owners - and if they the dogs are dangerous and maim people then they are not suitable to be in public environments.

No no, what i mean is, are htese specific dogs in the article pets or guard dogs.
There is a difference in responsibility for them both, of which guard dogs would naturally roam free over the fenced area.
If they are pets, then yes, the owners need a good slapping.

Worth remembering that this is in Oz rather than the UK, so there may not be rules about signs regarding dogs etc :/

Public!!!! they were in a closed yard belonging to somebody other than the dumb girl that CLIMBED over a fence to get in the yard!!!

The dogs and owners cannot be held accountable for the stupidity of others, I mean, do you expect all dog owners to not only fence in their yards, but also fit some kind of cover too!!! I know, why not cover the tops of the fence in barbed wire with flashing lights and alarms and have a security guard patrol the outer perimiter!

EDIT:
Funny, If the girl had been a burgler and was shot by the house owner for intruding, you would not be on her side!

You have issues.

Well I don't know about Bull Mastiff's here in UK but the Tibetan Mustiff's and its variants from where I come from usually found in the country side to guard the land / herds / owners.

I don't think it is right to own these big guard dogs in cities or popullated areas.
