Ok I'm not too clued on PC technicalities but have some questions.

1. What's founders edition and is it worth buying?
2. Do OEMs release GPUs same time as Nvidia?
3. Do certain OEMs make GPUs where the card name lights up on the top??
4. How do you even buy one? Some websites don't even load but others manage to buy it?

Hello!
Founders edition is an NVIDIA card that if you like defines the standard by which the cards should be made. You can find them on the NVIDIA website. Other manufacturers tweak the standard to say improve cooling or other performance, often by adding extra fans and so on. OEM's do generally release within weeks of the NVIDIA cards but sometimes it can take months. Some OEM's have LEDs and other cool stuff on their cards. At the moment there is a worldwide shortage of cards so it is very unlikely you will find anywhere that can supply a card. Even NVIDIA have run out. If you place an order for a card at Overclockers you will join the queue for one but it could take months before you actually get one. I don't think that NVIDIA have a queue system so you just have to wait until they are back in stock.

Right now trying to buy any of the newly released hardware is a waste of time. Either wait, buy cheap last gen in black Friday sales or prepare for stress and failure.

Followed by either option one or two.

  1. Founders Edition uses Nvidia's own cooler design. This generation 3xxx, Nvidia have actually done a very good job on the founders edition. Prior generations not so much, but it did improve with 2xxx. The Founder Edition cards are also the ones that sell at MSRP. This generation, that makes them really high in demand as they are usually the cheapest, prices that there partners cannot match, but also have exceptionally high build quality and cool pretty well.
  2. Other AIB's already have there own models out. At the start, normally the Founder model will come up for sale (well few mins they are up) with partner models varying. Lower end partner models come out sooner, while higher end models on which they take there time can take a bit longer
  3. Plenty of models have varying amount of RGB / lights and bling
  4. That's the crux of the problem, demand is sky high right now. Founder edition models, in particular the 3080 with 3070 following are in extremely high demand. Those are sold via Nvidia's site. The 3080 FE model right now, you got to be there the minute the link goes up as they allotment sells out within minutes. 3070 has been going in about 15 mins and 3090 abit longer. 3080 models in general from nvidia or partner's are in high demand in some cases day 1 orders still not fulfilled. For me it seems the websites have become more stable, partly as no one knows and when links all go up to get the FE models or other models for that matter.
I imagine when we see the inevitable 3080Ti, expect the more of same, crashing sites, cards selling out in minutes and for those hoping to get one, making a sacrifice the night before.
