Some racing games for PC?

I used to play Race 07 (sim) with a pad and found it ok if you just stick to touring cars. Anything faster is uncontrollable pretty much. I then got a decent wheel and actually found it harder to begin with but now I'm used to it a good wheel is definetely the way forward.

You could look at Shift 2, GRID, Dirt series...they're probably your best bet with a pad. Keep in mind the GRID multiplayer has been shut down but you can play online using Tungle, I'm sure a guide is available if you google.

Race 07 is a simulation that mainly covers touring cars, I think its a excellent intro to sim racing.

Also if you fancy something different, and free then trackmania nations is very addictive and some people are really into it - theres a huge scene for making custom tracks.

get your self a wheel and get on Iracing it's expensive but is the best out there IMO...

f1 2011 ain't bad to jump on and race...

Dirt 3 is ok and always going cheap in the MM as it's been given away with GPU's for a while now.

Grid – starting to show its age, but generally a decent all round racing title
DiRT – again showing age, but has some really good dirt track and rally racing
DiRT2 – excellent graphics, slightly OTT presentation, fun game but little American and quite mixed in terms of style
DiRT3 – back to roots rally racer, very good indeed. Excellent graphics, good handling
Shift – Not really all that good, performs poor on ATI hardware, was patched but still not good enough I felt, excellent graphics, twitchy handling
Shift2 – Improvement, but more of the same as Shift to be fair
F1 2010 – buggy and best to avoid
F1 2011 – Improvement and easy to play, good graphics and works excellent with a 360 pad for an F1 game
F1 GP4 – very old PC only racing game, lots of MODS out there if you want to try and update to 2005/6/7 seasons. Showing its age, excellent physics does work with a gamepad
rFactor – very mod friendly game, lots of choice

These are the most recent racing games I’ve tried for PC. I am keen to try C.A.R.S but I too don’t own wheel…

DiRT2 and DiRT3 can be picked up really cheaply, I got these for less then 5 quid. Gird can be purchased for very little.

There's a bunch of community patches and stuff for Shift 2 which improve the handling somewhat.

It's a tenner on Amazon.

Same guys are now making C.A.R.S.

Must try rFactor and iRacing.

Personally I couldnt recommend Shift 2 due to its horrible handling but I got it for free with my wheel so I shouldn't really complain.

For similar arcade games you can't go wrong with the Codemasters games, Dirt 3 is a lot of fun.

If you prefer to race on tarmac, then Racedriver:Grid is still the best arcade racer (of all time?) when played with a joypad. Need For Speed Shift 2 is prettier still, but lacks in gameplay features compared to Grid and really needs a steering wheel for it to be fun.

Dirt 1, 2, and 3: very good games. dirt 2 is the best in my view, but Dirt 1 has the most variety and despite its age holds up really well.
Need for Speed Shift, and Shift 2 - both excellent games
Flatout Ultimate Carnage (not the recent Flatout 3) - awesome destruction-based races.

Any ideas?
My list of racing/drivering games i own..

I'd say, F1 2011, Dirt 3, Shift 2, maybe any of the more arcadey NFS games (think The Run) is the most recent.

Not sure if CARS supports xbox controller. But I'd probably recommend it over iRacing..

Burnout Paradise (if you haven't already played it) is a great arcade racing game, and you can probably pick it up really cheaply now. Dirt 3 is pretty good too.

Oh, and Project C.A.R.S. driving game has the best graphics of any game of any genre - check it out if your rig is relatively up to date. Not sure how it is with a joypad though.
