Hi I've read the sticky but still got some basic/intermediate questions about RAID that anyone can possibily help me with?

I'm using software RAID (the onboard RAID controller on my Gigabyte z77 ds3h) level 10. Using 4 x 256gb drives.
I setup the RAID 10 easy in the bios thingy. Then went on to install windows 7 ultimate. I was expecting a prompt during the setup to install drivers, but this never came.

Anyhow, after loading all drivers and updates for windows 7, and using the Intel Rapid Storage program thing, an option was for it to "initialise" the raid array (500GB). After looking at posts using google, this is what I assumed:
That initialising would write the mirroring blocks in.
I would have thought that my RAID arrary would have done this already.
How come not so?

Also, it completed this morning, and another option came up after the initialising. I can now "verify" the array. I don't really know what this does. So here are my questions: What does "initialising" and "verifying" a RAID array, specifically, a RAID 10 array do?

Also, any tips on making it faster? I'm only getting 5.9 HD index on the windows experience index. But I've got 4 drives reading and 2 drives writing so in theory I should be blowing this benchmark away!

Thanks,
a RAID noob.

ps i'm going to test tonight by pulling one of the hds out and seeing what happens.
