Some sort of route planning software solution

Basically, i'm having no joy with google maps. I want to plan a multi-point route down to Spain (via the west coast of France), across to Barcelona, south french coast, up to Milan, back via Zurich>Paris. But google maps seems to be utterly useless (*We could not calculate driving directions because your query had too many addresses*- error, too many waypoints evidently). But I want to be choosy about my route, at least during the planning stage, so that i can get some sort of idea of the actual mileage and petrol costs involved etc. Just wondering if anyone's been through this before and maybe found an alternative, or some kind of workaround?. We all enjoy a road trip!.

Autoroute is what we used when we did a nurburgring trip in 2006

Edit: Michelin, maximum number of stages appears to be 8 (I'll need waaaay more). Autoroute next.

Just do the route in more overall stages. I.e. Blocks of 8 rather than trying to set up a mammoth all in one in jobbie with 30 stages etc.
